    Hi Everyone,

After using my Envy 14 (i5 2410m,) for about 3 weeks, the fan noise has pushed me to the point of considering extreme cooling mods :( . I know it may not be an issue for most, but I think HP designed either the fan system or the fan controller poorly. There are only four distinct "steps" on the fan ramp:
("fan always on" disabled in BIOS)

    <40C: fan is off
    40-50C: "Fan Level 1"
    51-65C: "Fan Level 2"
    66C+: "Fan Level 3" / Max?
(highest temp measured was 77C, no noticable change in speed)

While "Fan Level 3" sounds like a 747 and "Fan Level 2" is pretty loud, that is more or less expected. My problem is with "Fan Level 1" (bear with me on the names :p). I think that it is just too loud for simple web browsing. It could just be that my i5 runs hot, and the fan is ramping accordingly. Having the fan off while web browsing would be an absolute dream. I would love to know what kinds of temps others are getting at idle or while web browsing.

However, I did some research and found a few methods of controlling the fan/ dropping temps:

1: Patch the "DSDT Table" in the Windows registry to define your own fan ramp. (probably the most effective solution, but risky and quite advanced)

2: Undervolt the CPU, lowering temps. (not really possible with Sandy Bridge processors apparently)

3: Use software to control the fan. (rarely works for laptops, and i couldn't find any envy owners who had done it :( )

My biggest fear, though, is that the GPU, (which no one can seem to enable/use) is idling in the background and generating heat. Probably not true, but I can't tell.

So if anyone could post their SB Envy 14 temps (i5 or i7, i'm curious to see the difference that a 35W vs 45W TDP makes) or share a way to lower temps/control the fans, that would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading!

I am looking for exactly the same answers. I have tried speedfan but, unlike o my desktop, I cannot get control over the fans.
Temperature is showing constantly hovering around 62C or more with just intel graphics active and just the browser reading these posts.. Meanwhile the 747 is happely roaring driving me nuts...
