SO HOT, is SCARY

Man, I have a Presario R3210CA with Mobile AMD 2800+.... I had set the speed consistently to its highest at 1.6Ghz... man, is so hot, average around 64degree celicus!! is this normal?? I want to set it at this speed, since i can really feel the speed difference!!

That's hotter than normal. Standard behavior for 1.4V cores like the Athlon XP-M you have is for the fan to kick in at 55C until the CPU temp drops to 50C. At some point beyond 55C the fan will speed up. My suspicion is that someone applied the thermal compound improperly to the CPU, or your fan intake on the bottom of the notebook is being blocked. If you're feeling adventurous you can buy a tube of Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound (the good stuff) and see if that helps (it should), but somehow I doubt HP wants you to attempt such things.

PowerNOW! power management should be imperceptible to you. You only need to shut it down for benchmarks. I'd leave it enabled.

 

but is a laptop~ I don't want to crack open the laptop if you know what i mean! should i call hp and complaint? or are we not suppose to operate at max speed all the time?

The laptop should be able to run full speed all the time. 64C is within spec, it just seems higher than it needs to be.

Let's see... when I force my CPU to full speed (2GHz) at 1.4V core with ClockGen... gee, it jumped up to 62C rather quickly, then leveled off. And I'm using Arctic Silver 5. OK, I stand corrected. I've been undervolting for so long I guess I'd forgotten what the stock settings will do. The fan is still running slowly. Firing up Hot CPU Tester was enough to get the second fan to kick in and sent the CPU temp to 70C, where it leveled off. Setting the core voltage to 1.2V was enough to bring the CPU temp back below 60C. 70C is within spec, it just surprised me.

So it appears your notebook is fine after all. Sorry about the confusion. If you're going to run at full speed all the time, I recommend getting ClockGen for nForce3 motherboards and giving the 1.2V core setting a try. I'm currently idling at 53C, 2GHz at 1.2V. AMD is very conservative with their default voltage settings for some reason. I can run 1.6GHz at 1V, but that's probably better than you can do... still, you might be able to do better than 1.2V. Normally I run 1GHz at 0.8V and set higher speeds with ClockGen only when needed. I like quiet, so not having the fan run very often is nice. Saving a few bucks on the electric bill is nice too.

 

3700+ in zv5000z heats to ~55C when constantly on. But I don't see the point of using it at full speed all the time. Always ON can be justified if you frequently hit 100% CPU and stay like that for a long time. I almost never hit even 30% when at 800MHz

You 64C is alot, check your machine.

BTW, my ze1230 w/Athlon 1500+ had 75C-78C idle CPU temp and would go as high as 80+ when busy. The CPU seemed qute happy, so you may not need to worry too much about 64C.

ok, i have figure out how to reset the settings back to original!!

I am trying to make a shortcut that are preset to a specific frequency! I try following the instruction on www.cpuid.com, but i couldn't figure out, can you give me some guidance? do i need to create a file name save.txt and have the info below to it?

Hmm.. that looks fine to me. So long as the shortcut is set up correctly, with the "Start in:" directory set to wherever Clockgen is and all, it should work? I was changing my settings manually. I just tried the shortcut thing... yup, works here. I've got shortcuts to ClockGen and MobileMeter in my Startup folder. ClockGen should start, change the settings, then exit without bringing up the GUI when you use the -file option.

Thanks for to helpful email brian stretch!! I got everything to work except the FID multiplier?? for some reason, it wouldn't change it when i use the shortcut? but the voltage can be change!
