If you currently own an older HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario notebook manufactured in 2006 or in 2007 and have Windows 7 installed on it, you may be currently experiencing an issue with Windows suggesting that you replace your notebook battery. This can be in the form of a message in the taskbar, or a red X over the battery icon.

Doing some research, it looks like HP and Microsoft have been working on fixing this issue. It afflicts older notebooks made in the Windows Vista era. In addition to Microsoft releasing a software fix (see below), HP has released several new BIOS updates for certain notebook models that were especially affected. Please make sure you select the correct BIOS package for your notebook model! Failure to do so may render your notebook unusable!

    • HP Pavilion dv6000, dv6100, dv6200, dv6300, dv6400 series - AMD
This BIOS update is relevant to HP Pavilion dv60xx - dv64xx and Compaq Presario V60xx - V64xx notebooks with an AMD processor, where "x" is some digit.
      Flash to BIOS version F.43 - ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp48001-48500/sp48125.exe

    • HP Pavilion dv6500, dv6600, dv6700, dv6800, dv6900 series - AMD

      Flash to BIOS version F.33 - ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp48001-48500/sp48124.exe

    • HP Pavilion dv6500, dv6600, dv6700, dv6800, dv6900 series - INTEL
