So I have an HP DV6500t and I'm trying to get spdif to work for my receiver. I've tried 3 different receivers and can't seem to get it to work. The cable I'm using is all clear, including the actual 3.5mm adapter. I was wondering does it need the ones that have the metal tip?
Also which headphone jack has the spdif output? Is it the middle of the three?
Thanks.

The digital output needs to be selected in the sound driver 'playback devices' section and if your notebook headphone jack has the option you will see a red light inside the jack from the toslink lens.
If you look inside the headphone jack with a flashlight and all you see is a metal connection you don't have spdif, if you also see something that looks like a glass lens then you might. -
Question for you all with this notebook. I am getting a new HP and this is a DECIDING FACTOR and I'm confused.
Do ANY of the notebooks with HDMI now (Intel OR AMD) by HP, have an "unsupported" (or supported) SPDIF coaxial out using one of those two headphone jacks? Or, if it has an HDMI, is the only way you get digital audio out, by using the HDMI port?
My application would be this: I currently have the HP with the headphone jack which is SPDIF OPTICAL out. Sometimes I like to listen to my music on my 5.1 using the optical out. On the newer notebooks with HDMI, if I only want to listen to music, will I have to use the HDMI cable for digital audio, or can I find a driver to change the second headphone jack to coaxial SPDIF?
If coaxial SPDIF is not possible, are there any cables out there which will convert the HDMI port to a COAX RCA-style port for audio only? There must be a couple of pins on the HDMI cable with are for the audio, so I figure if there's an adapter out there, maybe you could use an HDMI port for coax out audio, if audio is all you want.
Please tell me if anyone has had this experience!
