Just received my dv2500t a few days ago and am trying to get the SPDIF audio output to work from the front headphone jack. According to the mixer it is an optical output. I have changed the mixer settings to default to SPDIF. When I play an MP3 file using Windows Media Player I can see the signal in the SPDIF mixer volume level. However, no signal is sent to my receiver through the headphone jack. I am using an optical toslink cable with a mini-plug adapter and am plugging it into the rightmost headphone jack (facing the front of the computer). Are there other settings that need to be adjusted for the SPDIF playback to work? I'm getting the same lack of results when I try to play a DVD with Dolby Digital. My optical cable works perfectly fine with my other audio equipment so I know that is not the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I think you need a hardware based decoder to decode the signal from the SPDIF.

Yes, I'm connecting the other end of the optical cable to my Yamaha receiver. Unfortunately no signal is being received by the receiver. I've also looked at the headphone jack while an mp3 file is playing and there is no light visible inside the jack. (I have a standalone mp3 player which also has spdif output and there is a clearly visible red light emanating from the jack during playback.) I think either my optical jack is defective or HP has discontinued the optical jack in the dv2500t. I checked again on the HP website and although the dv6500t lists spdif output in the product features, it is not listed as a dv2500t feature. I'm not sure whether this is just an omission or they have actually removed this feature on the smaller model. But I'm sure I have read reviews which mention the digital audio ouput. Maybe they were mistaken.
So has anyone been able to get spdif output with the dv2500t? I would like to know. I will probably end up returning the computer if I can't get it to work because the digital audio was a main consideration in buying the HP line. Thanks. -
I have the same problem with my dv9085. Some months ago I had it working with my Panasonic SA-XR55 (red light from the output in the dv9085, toslink, decoding by hardware,...). But now it's not working any more (volume indicator OK in Vista but no red light any more in the physical output).
Maybe it's because I changed several times the audiodriver (Windows update and/or HP-update)?
Finally I changed back to the last 'official' dv9085-HP-driver from the HP-website, still not working....
Anyone any idee?
SPDIF output with dv2500t, anyone got it to work?
