Im currently running on 640GB 7200 RPM as my Primary Hard Drive
And I'll be buying a Solid State Drive
Q:
1. Will changing hard drives affect my manufacturer's warranty?
2. Will this two work together? SDD as Primary and HDD as Secondary? If yes, if I installed a program on HDD (Secondary) will it run as fast as if I installed it on the SDD (Primary) ?
3. What SDD should I buy? 2.5" right? any suggested brands and cheap but good once?
4. Any things that I need to know?
Thanks in advance![]()

I have the same computer as you except mine has the upgrade i7 2720QM processor which is 3.3ghz turbo boost, I got the computer configured with dual hard drives from HP 1.5TB (2 x 750Gb), I am almost certain it does not void your warranty if you put in your own SSD since its an upgradable part of the computer, you might have to double check that, SSD as primary and HDD as secondary storage will definately work, if you install a program on your HDD it will not run as fast as your SSD, that's why you have an SSD in the first place. Windows itself and any programs you run from your SSD will be blazing fast so try to just keep the essentials on your SSD.
2.5" SSD are what fit this laptop, I bought an ocz vertex 3 120GB SSD from amazon I believe for $160 with a rebate, its really a matter of updating your BIOS, installing your SSD, if you go with the ocz just be aware that you might have to upgrade the firmware on your SSD and you cannot do that if you have it as your primary hard drive, so before you install windows on it, plug it in as a secondary, upgrade firmware if needed, visit ocz website for more instructions on that, once you have installed SSD and upgraded firmware, plug it in as your primary and disconnect your secondary HDD, install windows on SSD, let it boot and marinate, turn computer off, plug secondary HDD and voila, you are set to go.
Intel SSD are more reliable from most reviews so you might want to look at those, I went with OCZ because it's the fastest and with recent firmware updates the bad reviews these got when they were first released are non existent at least in my case. I've never had any issues with it -
I bought a Kingston Hyperx 240gb and put it in my main computer.
I took out the Intel G2 160gb from my main computer and put it in
the laptop, it is a lot snappier and the Intel is very reliable. Not sure
about the Kingston, which is the same as a vertex 3 yet, 2 crashes in 2 days,
just put it in. I suggest you buy a 240gb SSD and just take out the hd and store it as a backup, or if need warranty service. I see no reason to run a laptop with a SSD and Hard drive, unless you really need 2 hard drives in a laptop, it just drains the battery big time. -
I don't mean to hijack this topic or go off-subject, however, I just bought this same SSD for my PS3 (OCZ Vertex 3 120GB) for the heat benefits that an SSD offers versus a HDD with moving parts. My question is: would it be advantageous, in my situation, to put the drive into an enclosure and perform this firmware update from my laptop?

I would recommend wiping the drive blank and doing just that, the firmware update will help with reliability issues but if you are not having any issues, "if it ain't broke.."

1. Will changing hard drives affect my manufacturer's warranty? - Only if they find out
(If you only swap out the hard drive, its fine. If you are swapping out the DVD drive too, you are going to ned to put the DVD drive back in before you send it in.)
2. Will this two work together? SDD as Primary and HDD as Secondary? If yes, if I installed a program on HDD (Secondary) will it run as fast as if I installed it on the SDD (Primary) ? They will work together. Installing a program in the secondary wont be as fast though.
3. What SDD should I buy? 2.5" right? any suggested brands and cheap but good once? Depends on your budget. i would recommend a OCZ Agility 3 (60GB) For under $100.
For under $200 i recommend a OCZ Vertex 3 (120GB)
4. Any things that I need to know?
Its a SSD
Thanks in advance -

I am also interested in doing this. Can anyone post a quick guide for dummies on how to install the SSD into my Dv7-6100?
Thanks!
