I'm thinking of buying an ENVY17 with an SSD. The hp online purchase doesn't seem to mention option adding more than one drive if I choose SSD? I presume I can have an SSD and SATA in one laptop?

    1. Does the SSD fit same connection tray as SATA type drives?
    2. I already have a spare SATA 7200rpm drive so will I need to order a special HP tray to add it to an ENVY or is it normally included when ordering dual drive laptops with only one drive initially?

    Thanks for any help?

    1. yes. SSDs are standard 2.5'' drive dimensions with the same connectors.
    2. You will need a 2.5'' sata disk. A desktop drive will be too big. There should be no need for special trays, all hard drives follow the same specifications.

You can have a SSD and HD in a laptop if you have enough spare slots. The Envy should have two hard drive bays available.

I do not know why HP doesn't offer a SSD + HD drive. Are they running two HD / SSD in RAID?

Personally I'd go with a small SSD for OS and important programs, and a HD for the rest.

    Yes, already answered.

The 'trays' you refer to are called Caddys. They are not usually included with two drive notebooks if only one drive has been configured in the order. A lot of people purchase their Hard Drive Caddys from Newmodeus but I don't see one for the Envy listed. NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
You will also need the Sata connector block which attaches to the Hard Drive allowing you to connect the HD to the laptop, I am not sure if it comes with the Caddy or not. Might check the HP Store. It wouldn't surprise me if this question has been asked and answered in the Envy owners forum.

Thanks guys, yes finally notice this question has come up before. Caddy's need additional order if dual notebook comes with one drive bay empty.

What an inconvenience that is - ah well. Will need to order the additional caddy from hp spares and a notebook from a different web site hp shopping and hope they turn up together for a single international onward shipment!
