So in reading reviews of the last envy 17 some reviews said average, or even poor display while sites like PCMAG said it was possibly the best laptop screen ever. What is the general consensus? I currently have a 13" white unibody macbook, so as long as its better or as good as this I would be happy. Also does the latest model have better quality or IPS?

No IPS screen on the 17 Envy, although it is good quality. Not perfect, but I like it nearly as much as my wifes Macbook pro. Probably just slightly lower quality, but I am perfectly happy.

I think it is probably the same screen from last gen, but I do not know for sure. I thought processor and GPU were the only real changes from the 7690m series.

Viewing angles are good, but not perfect. Colors still wash out/invert at off angles. Typical for a decent TN panel.

Brightness is decent, but nowhere near as bright as the 3D screen (although the 3D is having other troubles). No complaints.

Color reproduction is more than sufficient for me, I do mostly gaming.

I have not really looked a black levels, but dark games look good.

Hope this helps some. It is a good monitor for the price. I am happy. If you want something nicer, Clevo makes some laptops with some excellent screens, at a price.

my main concern is brightness. one site said 250cdm and notebook check said 325cdm. oh and do you know if apple used only ips screens?

Check out the attached I took for a quick comparison. Adjusted for screen comparisons only, not overall image.

Left small HP 14", middle Envy 17", right Vaio F115FM (known to be dark), rear 30" Dell, right rear (Samsung-brightest).

In comparison, the display on the Envy 17 is good overall, good color balance, but not near the IPS of the Envy 15 or MBP. Not in the same ballpark. However the Envy 15 does suffer from inaccurate reds and blues.

Nothing touches the Macbook Pro Retina-nothing! And I would own one if not for the soldered RAM, nonstandard HHD connection/options, and number keypad (I crunch a lot of numbers for work).

The Envy 15 was brighter than the Samsung in the rear of the pic, it was that bright and that good, again damn red/blues ruined it.

The new Samsung lappy 700 is brighter than the Envy17 but colors to me are not as vibrant, not that it is on the Envy 17.

    Hope that helps.

the only macbook IPS screen is the current retina macbook.

Anyway if you come from a 13" macbook, you still have the extremely low 1280x800 res. So even if the screen quality was lower (which is seriously doubt!) you still have a GIGANTIC boost in pixeldensity thanks to a fullHD panel.
