Anyone have any experience with a Seagate Momentus XT in their Envy? Seems like a fair trade off in capacity and performance. The 500GB is under $100 now on Amazon and has peaked my interest.

I actually have the exact same set up as you plus the Seagate and am very pleased! I really can't report too much as I've only had it for a week now but it is just as fast as my desktop.

Nice! What drive does your desktop have? What drive did your Envy come with and did you just clone it or do a fresh install? Did it dramatically improve boot time as advertised?

I'm really interested in this too. I would love to have a full SSD, but that's just not practical. I love getting the SSD speed on launching Windows and such, but still have the capacity to store some other stuff.

Edit: Sorry to be thread-stealing, but I'm hoping this may pertain to OP as well. If I were to buy and install a Seagate Momentus XT, would it be possible to take the original HDD, buy some type of housing or enclosure for it, and use it as an external hard drive? I don't know too much about all that hardware modding, but I do think that'd be a great, productive use of the original HDD.

Oh man, that's great. Thanks Chyaddo! I had searched those actually. I just wasn't sure if they were what I was looking for :p.

That is a good idea. My personal plan, if I move forward, is to see about using my stock 320GB drive to upgrade my 40GB PlayStation 3.

It came with the 320gb HDD which I can't say I ever experienced because I bought this used. However, I can say this thing boots up fast! My desktop has a 640gb 7200rpm drive and it takes a solid half minute longer. Sorry I don't know more detailed specs as I don't have the time to run any tests. What I did test is from hibernation to typing my password to pulling up chrome took ~15 seconds which is plenty fast for me. Regular boot from completely powered off takes about ~30 seconds.

Again these are just approximations. I'll see if I can run a test.

Ok so my official boot time using the program listed in this forum was 43 seconds. Using my phone's stopwatch I could navigate and open Chrome in 37 seconds.

I also have the exact setup you do, minus the 8GB of RAM. I have the momentus XT 500gb and it runs pretty well, in terms of performance, I didn't notice much at first, after a few days and bootups, I was able to consistently get under 50seconds for my boot. But it varies, thats the only area i really notice the improvement. On a sidenote, HP protectsmart HDD protection isn't compatible with this drive ( I didn't expect it to be). I upgraded from 320gb hdd, so the momentus xt was a decent investment for me as I can't afford an SSD.

By the way, I did a fresh install. I wanted to see how it would perform out of the box, fresh. I have the same processor, as you also.
