I'm quite wary about someone stealing my laptop in college, and i have no experience nor the details about how these locks work.

Can anyone recommend a security cable that fits on the dv6500t?

Any one you can find from a reputable dealer will work.

I think HP laptops have slots for Kensington Microsaver locks.

Link to Kensington's lock page (for students)

Also, keep in mind that most locks are to "keep the honest people honest." As much as I disagree with that outlook, it holds pretty true because a determined thief will find a way most of the time. No lock is invincible, if someone has the time and the means to break the lock, they will find a way and the main thing a lock will do is prevent a 'crime of opportunity'.

But, it looks like Kensington does provide a guarantee on their locks that covers you up to $1500 in case the laptop is stolen.

Oh by all means, all you have to do is give it a good tug. The lock will rip right through the plastic notebook.
