If I sell the hard drive that comes with the Envy 15, and install my own SSD, could I ever get the computer repaired later on if there is anything wrong that comes up? Or does selling the original hdd void your warranty? What about if I needed a replacement computer down the line? Will that mess things up? Or can they send me a new laptop without any HDD?

I'm not familiar with HP warranty terms, but I know this would not affect a Dell warranty.
I hope that give a frame for reference. -

Last year when my motherboard went bad (wouldn't power up) I sent the laptop in for repair sans harddrive.
I told the rep that I was going to pull the HD out before sending it because it had sensitive personal data on it, which it did. I asked him to include my comments on the repair order. Of course he cautioned me not to and I don't know if he actually included my comments or not.
I pulled the HD and typed a note which I taped to the HD access door on the bottom of the notebook indicating why the drive was missing. Bottom line, the laptop was repaired with no issues and returned within a week.
With that said, with HD drives so cheap, I would most likely keep it around until the warranty expires as was suggested. It just might be the cheapest insurance you could get. -
RAM and hard disks are user upgradeable components. I have replaced my original RAM and Hard disks and the warranty is still valid. 4 services have been already done without any big fuss. However it doesn't matter what the results of those services were

you want to be careful here. From what I know about the envy 15, there is no HDD Bay, to get at the HDD you actually need to "crack the case" (remove the top cover and keyboard of the notebook). I am not sure here but after looking at what is involved in this disassembly (check out the service manual) I don't think that the HDD is considered a customer replaceable part. I believe SOME the RAM is, as 2 slots are accessible with a cover, but the other two slots are ontop of the board and again you have to crack the case to get at them too. I would call up HP to make sure.

Why on earth would you be required to keep the HDD that came with your system just to get it repaired or replaced? -

It's HP we're talking about here. Just hang onto the hard drive and pop it back in if you need to warranty it. Takes all the guess work out of the issue.

In the end, you take your chances and the outcome may depend on how much of a battle you are willing to put forth.
Selling HDD void warranty?
