Hi
I have some major issues with my Slimtype DS8A1H DVD Burner (the one that comes with LightScribe support). It is impossible to play a DVD movie, or even listen to MP3s burned on a DVD:
When I play a DVD movie, it plays with "hiccups" throughout the whole movie. The video playback is very snatchy; lagging and jumping. It might run too fast for a few seconds, then slow-down, then stop for a split second, and so on. The sound playback is terrible as well, and will not play continously without hiccups and breaks (this is true also with the playback of MP3 files burned on a DVD).
It seems as if the DVD player is not able to play the DVD media fast enough... While playing the DVD, the whole PC slows down, and even sound reproduction which has nothing to do with the DVD (like system sounds, for example) sounds terrible and slowed-down.
I have also noticed that it will burn DVDs much slower than it says it does: burning a full 4.5G DVD media takes more than an hour!
Another issue: this burner will only burn "+" DVDs and not "-" (although advertised to be able to burn both).
I had these problems with the DVD since day 1.
Interesting though, playing or burning a CD presents no problems at all.
So what do you think? Is it a DVD hardware problem? Can it be fixed with a firmware upgrade? Anybody else is experiencing something similar?
Thank you all

Does it give off any scratchy or really horrible sounding noises?
Do you get any not responding errors or does explorer restart?
Please list the specifications of the computer you use and the media player that is used to play the videos. -
Go to your device manager > IDE Controllers
Check that the primary and secondary channels have DMA as transfer mode.
It might be running on PIO mode due to badly scratched disc. -
The sound that comes out of the speakers is distorted and choppy, as if the data transfer rate between the DVD and the PC is lagging and cannot keep pace with the actual playback.
Another funny thing to mention, is that I can hear the actual DVD player mechanism rotating and reading data, amplified through the speakers.
I am receiving no non-responding errors (I mean, not more than I normally would have gotten ...), and explorer does not crash.
The specs of my PC:
HP dv2500t: Win XP SP2, T7500 (2.2 GHz), 3GB RAM, 160GB HD, NVIDIA 8400M GS, Slimtype DS8A1H DVD LightScribe Burner
Flipfire, about the IDE controllers:
Device 0 of the Primary controller was set to PIO, so I changed it to "DMA if available", but the current transfer mode is still PIO.
Thanks for your help guys! -
Restart your notebook
Its running slow/choppy because its in PIO mode. It will sometimes switch to this mode if the discs you put in are badly scratched. -
Hi FlipFire
You were totally right about diagnosing the problem!
It was the PIO setting that made my DVD player stutter.
The only problem was that I couldn't force the OS to use DMA setting, even though I chose "DMA if available" (it would still use PIO).
So I started browsing around for a solution and finally came across:
http://winhlp.com/node/10
Where you can download a VB Script on the top of the page, that when activated resets the data transfer mode back to DMA (at this page you can also find a thorough technical explanation of the syndrome).
Thanks again, hopefully this post can help those suffering from the same OS malignancy

That's what I love about life. You learn new things everyday.

During the course of my life, I have learned that the more you learn, the more you find out there is still to be learned (in an inverse ratio).
But it is well worth it:
Now I can watch DVDs on my PC!!!!

YAY!! lol...

Hi,
Im also having the similar problem. I am getting annoying sounds from speakers when i insert a DVD or CD in to DVD drive. I am also having the same configuration - mine is also hp dv2500t and the same dvd drive. Surprisingly the data speeds are good. But im getting that annoying sound due to which im unable to play any discs
I applied all the tips you guys have given in this forum, but no luck.
When I am looking at Advanced settings ..
Primary IDE device 0
Trasfer Mode : DMA if available
current transfer mode : Multi word DMA mode 2
primary ide , device 1 is showing Transfer type : DMA if available
Current transfer mode as : Not Applicable
both device 0 and device 1 of Secondary IDE are showing
Transfer type : DMA if available
Current transfer mode as : Not Applicable
What does "Current transfer mode as : Not Applicable" mean?
Please help me out as i am facing this issue even after my dvd drive is replaced.
Also i tried uninstalling the driver, but no luck.
Awaiting for ur reply
Thanks,

Hi there. I have the ds8a1h and the dv2000. The drive or software certainly has issues. Windows explorer tabs were missing, no ability to burn, so I am now typing from a newly 'recovered' pc. Although my recording/burn ability is back, certain DVD's will not read. I checked under IDE in device manager. I capture of the screen is attached. There is no IDE channels; I have ATA channels 0 and 1. Both show DMA checked. Still cant play DVD's burned with XP Deep Burner etc.

In furtherance of the last message my ds8a1h will read dvd-r disks if it writes those disks. DVD-r disks written elsewhere cannot be read by the drive.

I have a tx2000z with the slimtype DVD A HS8A1H dvd RW. It worked for about 6 months until yesterday. I had a DVD in there, open on the main menu of the DVD. I was on battery power, phone rang, and didn't get back to the computer. When I did it was in sleep mode and I just shut the laptop. Later, I charged the computer and the DVD palyer no longer works. It recognizes CD's, but not DVD's including ones that I have wateched on this computer. When I put a dvd in now, it spins like crazy for a while and nothing happens. Do I need to reinstall a decryper, or drivers or something? Currently there are 2 drivers listed under the dvd drive (now listed as CD rom under properties in device manager). I try to update drivers and it says they are up to date.
This is really annoying - if someone knows how to fix this please help!
