I have a Pavillion dm4 2191us got it a low price and now I know why,

HP is the worst, and I hesitated to the Believe this, the WORST Computer company in history!!!!

    Worse than Apple
    Worse than Samsung
    Worse than Acer

Dell is King and the best I have ever used ( over 7 years)

HP has a year warranty? No its 21 days, I was shocked and thought it was a mistake until I did my research:

    Article

I have had the laptop for less than 90 days and found a defect on the keyboard and they said

    Its my fault from use
It should have been reported in 21 days during the warranty period
I said I have a year, response was this was for defects............WHAT?

HP is scamming people in my opinion, poor product quality ( I have 2 Touchpads and they stink) and now a 21 day warranty.

Don't believe me? Many many complaints about this are on the net google it.

    :(

    Hi DRFP,
Are you having a problem with your DM4 that HP is not assisting you with? HP products are covered by a 1yr manufacture warranty starting from your date of purchase. I work for HP so if you need any assistance please feel free to respond.

    That article was from 2008.

"HP is the worst, and I hesitated to the Believe this, the WORST Computer company in history!!!!"

I'm not going to defend HP as they've made their mistakes and will probably still make mistakes as they're a great big company.

Did you know that the cheaper Toshiba machines are made right next to the cheap Acer machines? Did you know that the Samsung 7 slate ( A device that costs over $1100) still hasn't been fixed since its release? It features a lovely screen that likes to detach itself from the main body.

HP are no better or worse than ANY of the other oems.

    Keyboard:
"If they can determine that the damage was caused by user error, then the standard warranty does not cover that. The standard warranty covers manufacturing defects."

Something seems off with your post so maybe a little bit more info would be nice. As it stands I'd probably call HP again, be nice, calm, stating that you have an issue with your keyboard and you might be lucky.

I think it's OK for OEMs to have issues with quality control and manufacturing, but I would say that the proof is in the pudding when it comes to the customer support to handle issues that arise.

I can't speak for HP as I've never had to deal with their customer support, but I've had to deal with Dell's customer support and found it fantastic.

I recently sent an Asus EP121 back for repair... zero issues (30 day fix time). I've also only ever known fantastic support from HP albeit business support with ADP warranty. You do get what you pay for (in some cases).

I take disagreement with that line of blank statement without any real world independent testing or researching to prove otherwise. Also high price doesn't mean good quality. aka "Apple" your paying for the name as well as paying a premium to buy those goods.

And least I remind the OP that Dell and various other company were selling defective Nvidia an AMD GPU to the consumers and not honoring and replacing the defective motherboard in those laptops. So That to me tells me alot more about the company reputation then some off remark.

This sounds more a like refurbished computer then a brand new bought computer so there seems to be some misinformation being tossed out here and since you gave no background info on the laptop and or receipt to show otherwise is dubious at best.

Sounds more like a blog posting and not true journalist reporting.....and also the name is not a recognized name to begin with to believe it's reporting as well.

Again this sounds more like a refurbished computer then a new computer....

If the keyboard is abused it will break and if they found out you broke the keyboard from abuse then it falls upon you to pay for the repair. Also you can buy replacement keyboards for less then sending it to the company and you would say more in the end. One should expect nothing last forever and to think otherwise is one's own fault.

Those are all good in all but anyone can say pretty much anything on the net and since it can't be fact checked that in itself tells nothing of useful information for the rest to gleam off.

This is a fact that is lost in translation. Endusers are quick to jump on the band wagon but fail to notice all those outsourcing have the same computer built by one comany but with different lines in the same company building multiple computers for different company with different specs.

This why companies have such clauses and warranty conditions to protect themselves and their reputation from unscrupulous people trying to make money from them for outrageous claims. They want all to know that the computer was built for everyday usage but that the owner must also maintain and protect their computer from abuse and damages that will void the warranty. And I agree with Excalibur there seems to be something off in your posting as well.....

My proof in the pudding is that Dell is bottom of the pack since they never acknowledge that my Dell lattitude D830 had a defective Nvidia GPU even though all those court cases proofed otherwise and I still own a Dell but not one that has the Nvidia GPU that honor goes to my Gateway M68 which so far has performed well for me. So if where looking at the pudding then I would say Gateway P-6860, NV52 and HP DV4, DV5, DV6 has worked well for me so far.

I own both HP (currently an Envy 17 that I use for work) and multiple Dell Latitudes.

Can't speak for HP because I've never had to use their customer service (though I emailed their sales with a question about hardware configuration and never got a response).

Can't speak for Dell beyond the last few years (since the E6400), but the limited interaction I've had has been extremely positive. Perhaps like Sprint -- who used to have a terrible customer service track record -- Dell has turned it around in the last few years? Can't say but I've personally purchased (as in not through a company, but out of my own pocket) 5 Latitudes from them in the last 2.5-3.5 years and totally satisfied.

Honestly, I was pretty set on the Elitebook 8460w (basically nothing competes with this laptop from Dell or Lenovo), but I've been reading some of these threads here and even some of the reviews on the HP site and I'm a little worried about quality control on the Elitebook W's.

I returned a Dell Latitude st as the hard drive had failed (Yes, I know, I could have replaced it myself)... they wouldn't replace the hard drive UNLESS I paid for the slight screen damage.... ... Eh? (Which was there out of the box but didn't stop anything from working)

I asked for them to send it back and replaced it myself. Nifty way of getting out of repairing the thing.

It can simply be who you get on the day that you call.

    My take on customer support
US based company - email them.
    Non-US based company- call them.

prove to work for me couple of times.

Dell -- horrible. I called them for onsite service on a PC and 3 days later I was calling them for customer self repair.

HP tech just left my office. Not too thrilled but after going back and forth instead of giving me the crap that Dell's contractor did (Call to dell again, this call is expired with us) it's better.

Another time with Dell I ask them to send me a replacement HDD for a defective replacement. "Sorry we don't ship a hard drive to you." was the answer! Time to repair was about 12 days. HP swap my screen and motherboard door-to-door in 3 days.

    LOL. Nice emoticon.

I've had Dell laptops before. They lasted about 4 years but had all issues due to poor build quality. I was able to fix them all and even upgrade some parts (CPU, GPU, screen, etc.).

I've had/have HPs. Only one of them went belly up. My TX2500. AMD CPUs run hot and HP did a poor job designing the cooling system. I upgraded the cooling system using a copper shim and better thermal paste. Didn't matter in the end. But that TX2500 lasted about 3 years before giving up the ghost.

Buy my HP HDX 9000s, HP DV5's and my Elitebook 2760P tablet are all running like champs. No issues. All use Intel CPUs and Nvidia GPUs with the exception of the Elitebook (Intel integrated graphics). I've upgraded the HDXs with an X9000. The DV5s with T9800s. All have SSDs (Vertex 1's, Intel 320 and 520).

So I'd have to say that HP notebooks are pretty good. I'm happy and perhaps lucky. :)

Anecdotal evidence is the worst kind of evidence. My HP laptop lasted 6 years until it finally went kaput. Of course, many people are going to complain, thousands of dollars are at stake...

If it really is a defect, you have to keep pushing them to escalate the problem. If you are persistent, polite, and patient, you will likely have success with HP. Just keep telling them you want to escalate it. They can't give every person who spills milk on their laptop a new one; they have to make it a little hard.

I cant stand Dell... had heaps of issues with their Latitude line which shouldn't be the case since they are the corporate line.

Their onsite techs blow... they seem to be 1st year uni students earning a pittance on each call out.

I shudder to think about their consumer line.

HP Enterprise is excellent. They are more dilligent than me. They will call you at 8.30am to meet you at 9am to fix your laptop.

HP home is much less good. Could be without a laptop for weeks.

Alienware support isn't too bad. The people on the phone don't seem to know a thing about computers and they're Indian, but the techs they send out seem okay...
