    Shanghai typhoon delaying shipments

I found this out after grilling first an overseas HP front-line rep (who hung up on me), then calling back and getting a supervisor. I wanted to know why, after it said my order had shipped yesterday, I still had not seen any tracking info on the FedEx site. And I mean any--no scans at all. If your order was supposed to ship by now, this is why it hasn't. (My order was a "customized" laptop.)

Here's a link to the overall typhoon story on MSNBC:

    Typhoon Wipha

I had to find the typhoon story on my own--even FedEx reps had not seen a "crawl" on their screens about the delays, just that there were delays. It was a bad storm: several people lost their lives, and many more lost their homes.

I imagine many of you already know this, but for those who don't: According to an HP rep I spoke to last week, all HP laptops are made--from the first screw in the chassis to the final taping up of the box and slapping on of the FedEx label--in China. They are not touched by any HP assemblers in North America at all. (HP desktops are still assembled in North America, according to the rep.)

I already knew, from reading and posting on the Sager/Clevo forum, that all laptops are made, at least as far as the chassis, by just a few companies in China: Quanta, Clevo, Foxconn, etc. Apparently, in HP's case, the laptops entirely are assembled, tested (hopefully), boxed, labelled, and drop-shipped via FedEx directly from the factory in Shanghai to the eager end-user. The only stop they make is when going thru customs.

The rep I spoke to today had a heavy accent, but I believe he said HP would probably upgrade the shipping to overnight or two-day, because of the delay, but I'm not holding my breath. As you can see from the picture in the MSNBC article, there is a lot of flooding, and who knows how much water on the road between the factory and the airport?

This is one of those cases where, despite the inconvenience of having to wait around for the FedEx guy, I'm glad it is a "signature-required" package--I plan to inspect the exterior of the box thoroughly for water damage, or any other damage, when he gets here w/it, and take pics if necessary in case I need to file a claim.

My laptop shipped on Tuesday and I got a FedEx shipping number, but when I try to track the package FedEx says that the number is not in their system.

My laptop was probably one of the ones sitting on the dock when the storm hit.

    Thanks for the update.

Man, that's why I hate HP. First they outsource so they can cut the manufacturing costs of the computer down, and in return, sell a cheaper computer and stay competitive in the market, and now this. HP should have known better than to allow a typhoon in China. There's NO reason why they can't force some more underage laborers to pick up the slack!

I think they should do more than upgrade the shipping. I want a discount on that laptop, and I want HP to promise no more typhoons. My laptop should be their first priority. If they outsource, they might as well get it right!

/sarcasm <---better? I thought I was being very obvious...was I too mild about the underage laborers?

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. I mean, come on, it's a freakin typhoon, for christ's sakes. I understand being unhappy with delayed shipments, China in general, and whatnot, but we're talking about a natural disaster that's already taken lives. Cut these people some slack.

I was wondering why hp's site said my order had shipped Monday, but my tracking info showed up today saying it had shipped today after a fedex cutoff. It's all good though cause it arrived in the US a few hours ago, and I should get it in a few days.

Well I'm in SC and my estimated delivery date is Monday, but maybe a miracle will happen and I'll receive it before the weekend so I can get it cleaned up before school Monday.

I was about to be angry when I saw the delivery status when I saw it couple minutes ago and then seeing this thread - eh, not so mad anymore. I wish the delivery came directly to WA instead of going to Indiana and back to Tacoma and toward Seattle - then I'll have to wait until FedEx comes to Puyallup, which is like 30 minutes from Tacoma. :swoon:

    Factories shut down
The densely populated area is home to many small businesses and factories, with a mixture of modern buildings and older brick homes. Some 50,000 Zhejiang factories on the path of Wipha were forced to halt production, Xinhua said.

Pavilion branded notebooks - and perhaps all other HP models/series as well - are made by Quanta Computers. Perhaps if you've a unit waiting, you might be inclined to google their location and see the latest local weather report surrounding the Quanta manufacturing facilities to give a hint as to when things might get better.

    ALso waiting for my DV2500T

Got my tracking # but it doesn't bring up anything on the fedex website. Called fedex and they say weather issues.

Man this sucks....but still...hope they are ok down there in China. Don't mind waiting a little longer if it means people won't risk their lives to ship some laptops.....also hope my laptop isn't damaged.

Hi. I'm new here. I have been reading the forums quite a bit and decided to sign up.

I ordered a HP DV6500T also on September 11, 2007 using the 30% discount, estimated ship date was the 20th. I got an email that my order was shipped out on the 19th.

Like the rest of you, I am unable to track the package at all. There's just not any information display. Anyways, I hope the folks in China are doing ok and hopefully recover from all of this.

Being someone who works in the freight forwarding business and dealing with a lot of factories in china, i can say depending on the airline the shipment can be delayed up to a week. I dont exactly know what airline HP uses to ship their notebooks, but I can tell you its probably the cheapest airline which means they probably have a 1 week backup. I know a huge Air China shipment i had coming in just left shanghai today, it was scheduled to leave on the 18th.

It will take a day or two for it to show up with any tracking info. Mine was shipped on the 18th and arrived yesterday.

It's frustrating but it takes a little while to show up.

I hope the laptop isn't in any bad shape or submerged in water! :D

Not yet and hopefully I won't. I am on it right now. I haven't done a clean install yet as I am waiting for my recovery disk from compusa. I have a dv2500t. My only minor complaint is the bit of heat it gives off by the hard drive but I expected that based on reviews.

I think they were holding the notebooks in Alaska. It doesn't say that the notebooks arrived in Indianapolis - only Int'l Shipment Release. This was my old status before I returned the notebook for 30% and better hardware:

When I talked to the FedEx guy, he told me Sep. 25th, so it seems like it's coming on the 24th now, w00t! It only takes one day to get a laptop from China to Los Angeles? wow
