wow spook yours run really cool if it idles at 28. Is yours undervolted? Which program are you using too monitor the temps?

    (2ghz)
    Mine idles:40-45
    Surfing & Music/Movie:50-55
    World of Warcraft: 60+
    Counter Strike Source: 70+

Im using a cooling pad but it mostly cools the HD. Coretemp.exe was used to monitor these temps. These are the temps when plugged in.. on battery power saver their about 10 deg cooler. Its summer here at the moment too.

    http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Great thing about the program is you dont have to install it and its not a virus. Its just an .exe file that opens an information window.

flip, I'm not undervolting at all. My fan just runs alot for some reason, as in, its never off, and never really idling. Disadvantage is some noise, but id rather have a lower proc temp. Guessing the fan was a defect, but i think its beneficial in this case. could be that santa rosa is running cooler and maybe less residual heat from the new graphics chip. using speedfan to monitor temps, i dont think it doesn't make much difference what program u use, they draw the information from the same sensors anyways.

Speedfan and coretemp give out different temp readings. Speedfan uses a combined temp or something? it was explained it a different thread before why you get different readouts. Try using coretemp for a while and tell me what temps you get. I dont use speedfan anymore as coretemp gives me consistent read outs

I never hear my fan go on at all, i usually have to stick my hand at the back and feel warm air comming out. My left palm rest only gets really warm if im playing games.

pretty sure speedfan isnt combine temp, can see a dif temp for each core. Yeah, my fan is always on, and quite noticeable. Most heat comes from the harddrive, hp prob should've put in a cooler drive or had better vent placement.

whoa, so i downloaded core temp and yikes. speedfan really sucks then. Anyways, new idle temp is 42 degrees celsius. will post gaming temps later. Thanks for pointing out the software inaccuracy, i was prob hitting 80 plus degrees with call of duty and pretty much murdering the laptop.

My fan always runs, since I upgraded to vista. I have a dv2000Z, with 2 gigs ram. Using core temp here is what I get

    Idle:50
    Browsing web/Word Processing/Listening to music: 55-60
    Running Spybot: 90

Yeah, those temps are bit on the high side. Are you using the default bloatware infested Vista or XP installation? if so it might be worth it to do a clean install. Also check your power settings. I have a V3000Z(which is the Compaq equivalent of the dv2000Z) and usually in Vista it idles around 39C - 44C. The temperatures during websurfing depends on the website(if it has lots of flash then the temps will be higher than just say using a text based website), Generally surfing NBR listening to online radio my cpu temps are in the low to mid 40C's. The cpu temps were similar in XP but the main difference was in the graphics card which runs hotter in Vista since it uses it more than XP. The max with dual instances of Prime95 loading both cores was around 70C.

Personally I find the heat not an issue but the frigging Fan to be a huge issue. The inconsistent fan noise is annoying. It revs up at high RPM's for about 30 seconds, then steadily slows down and a few minutes later deactivates itself, about 2-3 mins later it starts up again and the process is repeated till the computer is shutdown, restarted, or hibernated. This sucks especially when you're in an empty library typing an essay when it sooooo quiet, the fan is soooo loud. When I'm in the cafeteria or a place where's it has modest background noise the fan's sound can't be heard but at quiet places, ..... its horrible. This sucks some more because I bought the DV2000 for school and I don’t use it except for typing. (I don’t even have music, movies, or games in my notebook harddrive) I think next time I go to the library to type, I think I’ll just bring some ear plugs.

I dont seem to have any problems with fan noise on mine. I usually only hear it at startup when the fan goes on for a few seconds

Undervolt your laptop so your fans dont go on as much
