...or is it just common with most laptops? Mine is actually the DV6426US from circuit city for $650. I really didn't notice the noise until I read about the issue here (ignorance is bliss). Now it bothers me, but only when I concentrate on it. Usually I have something in the background and don't notice the noise.

My question is: If I return it, what are my chances that the next one will have the same noise?

My friend listened to it and said it sounded like his Dell, all the core duo's make the noise, and not to worry. The HP website says that the noise is standard.

    Thanks

This noise is normal on all or almost all laptops. So I would not recomend to return it just because of that little noise, if you do you there will be 90-100% that you will get one with the noice. Like you just said, you did not noticed the noise until you read about it, and it does not bother you unless you think about it. That means there is nothing to worry about.

The same thing happend to me, I noticed the noise right after I read about it. But since there is always background noise you wont here it constantly.

Unless you are having other problems don't return it!!

heh you could end up getting one with a more noticeable noise than yours

and even worse is that you could end up with a laptop with other problems too!

better the devil ya know than the devil ya dont

well, unless you are willing to buy a notebook without Intel's Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors...then, yes, it's highly possible that you will still hear the buzzing sound... no matter which brand of notebook you purchase...

Thanks everyone for your input - I'll hold onto it then, seems like that wine is a normal thing. Maybe the reason I've read so many complaints is because the DV series was so wildly popular.

There's a long thread on this topic here. I had the same noise, but the free RM clock utility stopped it when I followed the instructions.

1.5 hrs? seems ok I guess, you do have the standard 6 Cell battery right?
If you don't mind, try dim down the screen brightness, set the power mode to Power Saver and see how long the battery lasts...

Yes, I have the standard battery.Me and my friends bought 3 of 6426us and every single one has a different bettery life. This is my first laptop and I'm taking it to my home country in Europe which means no warranty when I'm out of the States that's why I'm so anxious about it.I still have some time to exchange it for another one but I wanted to ask you guys what you think about it cuz I have completely no idea...btw my friend's 6426 from which I'm writing now used 45% of battery during the 1.5 hours period...and mine...all I can get is 90 min...I am very concerned...

Guys, this noise is really annoying and when my first dv9000 had it, I have replaced it for another one which did not have it at all. So, recommended to replace. And they will do it.

Retail store, but I did it through HP too in other cases...They have just asked me to send it back with their courier (Fedex) picked-up. And sent another machine same day.

After my original post I decided to go against the advice here – I just couldn't take the noise anymore. The second HP had the same noise so I got rid of the HP DV series all together. After reading all the complaints here and getting two-in-a-row with the noise, I decided my chances were slim getting a quiet machine.

Do all three laptops, between you and your friends, have that noise? Is your laptop the only one with poor battery life?

If only you have poor battery life, I'd exchange it. Or, if the noise annoys you so much, exchange it for an HP with AMD processor.

You should be able to compare the three and make a decision based on that.

Edit: Not all laptops have the high pitched noise and it's not normal.

did you try rm clock? im using the trick now and it works, the laptop is normal again. the only thing i think it affects are the battery life and heat. I'll do a drain test tomorrow with rm clock on/off.

Do you think that's acceptable? I just responded to you in another post where you complain that it's too hot and you're looking for a solution.

So, you have to mess around with the settings, install a third party program, and sacrifice noise or heat and fan. Do you think you should have to put-up with trying to find "tricks" that make your new laptop work like it should?

If so, you're more patient than I.
