At long last, I am ready to order a customized R4000 at HPShopping.com. The pre-configs are all missing something that I want, and from what I hear HPShopping has the best "bad pixel" policy. Unfortunately, the wait time has stretched out again--an R4000 configured today won't be built until June 27.
Now I'm wondering if I should wait to see what HP/Compaq offers with AMD's new Turion 64 processor instead. The Lance Armstrong L2000 special edition sounds like it will have decent specs. The screen is 14" instead of 15.4", but at least it's widescreen. IIRC it is launching around June 20th. Will HP offer any other Turion models, or is the L2000 going to be the only way to get one for a while? And if I order one when it launches, will I probably have a long wait like those who ordered the ZV6000 when it first came out? Are any other manufacturers going to bring out Turions before HP? I don't want to wait forever, as I am currently suffering with a Pentium II 366 MHz and 12" screen!
Turion will have better battery life than Athlon, but that isn't critical to me (I could get by with a 12-cell in an R4000). Are there any other reasons to wait for Turion? Performance, weight, etc.? I'll be using it for photo editing, word processing, and Internet--no gaming.

Weight, mostly. The L2000's are about 5.5 pounds, considerably lighter than the R4000's. Performance should be nearly identical to the Athlon 64 at the same clock speed but you can get faster Athlon 64's. In your case, decide how much you value the lighter weight and whether you can live with the smaller screen.
Personally, I think the L2000 Special Edition is going to be a HUGE hit. If you want one, order it as soon as the HP order page goes live. Get Bluetooth and pair it with an external monitor and Bluetooth keyboard and mouse if need be.
The other must-see Turion notebook is the Acer Ferrari 4000, but that's going to be a bit over $2,000. Sigh. There are others but I'm not sure if they'll make their way to North America or not.
Should I wait for Turion 64?
