It's really better to take it out to save it, BUT if power suddenly gets down, you will most likely loose your unsaved information. It will still last for more than 2 years with AC-power-on most of the times.

My former notebook was a HP Pavilion zd7000, i enjoyed it for almost 3 years before i replaced it with my current machine. I use my notebooks like a desktop workstation witch means it's turned on 14 hours per day 6 days per week. 90% of the time it's on AC power with the battery in it, i only take it out to clean the machine. After 3 years the battery of my HP lasted only 10 to 15 minutes shorter compared to when i just got it. So in my opinion you don't have to worry about leaving it in at all.

Take it out at 40% battery left and leave it. You can also put it in the fridge.

I don't know where you got this advice to be honest. It's a well known fact that it's best to store a battery fully charged, and recharge it fully every once in a while (twice a year should be enough) if you don't use it for long periods.
NEVER put it in the fridge, this can really damage the battery !!

allan_huang's advice may seem like madness, but infact, its the right thing to do. Leaving the battery at full charge and then storing it, means it loses more of its life. At 100% charge, the average loss of capacity is 20% in an envorinment of 25 C. When compared with a battery at 40% charge, in the same environment, the loss of capacity if just 4%.

Leaving it in the frigde is a good way to keep the temperature down, and further prolong its capacity rating. At a 40% charge, and leaving the battery at 0 C, the average loss of capacity is just 2%. If you wih to use the battery again, then you must wait until all the condensation has dissapeared, and when the battery is back up to room temperature. After that, it can be used as normal. Read the Battery Guide for more information, as Lithus already mentioned.

kinda of off topic but i had a 7 cell battery for a remote controlled boat, i left it in my closet for 2 years without using it, when my brother went to use it wouldn't hold a charge so he kept charging it then throwing it in the fridge, then re charging it and throwing it in the fridge and it actually brought the battery back to life where if holds a normal charge.

I keep my battery at ~40% charge out of my laptop.
