I've had this happen 5 times to me since i've gotten my laptop. It happens when your caps light is on and you're typing in lowercase and then your clicking becomes an issue.

It was very frustrating and I did all kinds of buttom combinations in an attempt to "rescramble" it back to normality. Finally after 20 minutes of frustration, I solved this problem. I simply held down the right shift button (under enter) and pressed caps lock and it appeared to sync the keyboard again. Worked 5 out of 5 for me. I wouldn't of posted it if it was just pure luck, but trying it and being successful 5 out of 5 I felt I had to share to see if it would work for anybody else.

This is the most common issue in dv5000 and dv8000 models. I had the same problem and I removed Synaptics Touchpad driver and have my scroll lock on and the problem never occured to me again.
