Hello i am considering purchasing this laptop with the minimal processor which is the AMD Turion(TM) II Dual-Core Mobile Processor P540 (2.4GHz, 2MB L2 Cache)
will it bottleneck the 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA] ?

The 5650 isnt really that powerful and i cant imagine the p540 bottlenecking it. I have seen overclocked I7 only score about 9k on 3dmark06 with mobile ATI5650. The P540 is going to be a lot more powerful then my old intel core 2 duo P7350 which was able to score 8592 on 3dmark06. (though that was bottlenecking my geforce 9800M)

If your not in any hurry ill let you know soon, I plan to order the setup your asking about for $629

i dont currently login to any chat clients because i work 8am-9pm 5 days a week and 12-8 on weekends. Next month i start 3 college classes so ill be busy. I cant order it until dec 31 (payday) and then add shipping -- it will be awhile until i order.

I did find a gateway nv for $540 with AMD N930 ATI 5650 -- its an ugly laptop but the price is very appealing.

edit: I am comparing the ATI 5650 to my geforce 9800M. A geforce 9800M backed by an X9100 is a very powerful mobile gaming setup. The highest 3dmark score ive seen by a 5650/5730 is about 9200. My Gateway FX with X9100 / Geforce 9800Mwas around 12,400 with a medium overclock and i head a lot more overclocking room left. Might of hit 13,000...

just a follow up, unless an amazing deal pops up I now plan to buy the ugly gateway. I got a grey market AMD X920 quad core black edition cpu on the way to me too. with any luck the gateway will be compatible with the chip. Gateway specs show it is compatible with an N930 which is quad core amd -- X920 is really same thing with different multiplier and unlocked so im pretty sure it will work.

looking forward to some overclocking CPU/GPU and set some laptop benchmark records on shoestring budget.

Do report back results when you get the x920 put in.
If you can do before/after benchmarks, that'd be cool.

Might I ask who you got the x920 from? Only vendor I could find was starmicroinc.net (also on eBay) and I didn't get the order in before they went on vacation today until 1/3 :(

I ordered a Thinkpad Edge 15" today, hoping that using non-discrete 4250 graphics will offset the +10W in the CPU, and evens out...

The TP has an access cover on the bottom, similar to my Gateway P-6860FX, where the CPU/heatsink is accessible under it. Should be a simple swap, hopefully the BIOS supports the x920!

    Also ordered a Corsair 8GB DDR3-10600/1333 mHz kit from Newegg - $101.99 - 10% laptop memory coupon, plus a tube of AS5.
