I am getting a new hp laptop dv7t and in the past I have pretty much always kept my laptop in sleep mode when it was not in use. If I was going to not use it for a couple of days then I would turn it off. It is always plugged in since it is pretty much a desktop laptop.

What is the best practice for a always plugged in laptop??

Take out the battery if you're not going to use it.
I'd say get a cooler for it as well, unless it can stay cool by itself.
And you cause more wear by turning it off and on everyday than you do leaving it running, I never did figure out how sleep fits in between those.

Sleep turns the hard drive and screen off saves everything to memory and sends just enough electricity to keep the memory running.

I like it because my system can be up and running in just a few seconds. Based on your reply I guess you just keep your system ON all the time?

Why do you suggest taking out the battery? I keep mine plugged in and usually use it with the cord, but I want the battery fully charged for when I take it somewhere. Is this a problem? It's my first laptop, so I'm still learning.

I have had my dell hooked up with the battery and plug for over 4 years and I have never had any problems. When the battery needs charging it charges but after that nothing happens to the battery when it is plugged in.

Actually it ruins the battery. There is some kind of battery guide thing on the forum that talks about it I believe.

Also it might depend on the manufacture to determine the battery management also. my gateway battery would be always plugged in, and HM even detected the maximum charge where it should be, and where it currently read as 100%( which was a 20-30% decrease). Also i believe from the guide the maximum you should keep the battery plugged in after its charge is about 8 hours.

So I would charge up the battery, then unhook the battery.
