    Model: Paviion dm1-4010us , latest BIOS (F19), Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1, 64 bit.
For a few months now this unit has been randomly going to sleep while in use. Seemingly at random, I can't pinpoint any specific act or application that I can say with certainty is the cause. Finally, after listening to my wife yell each time it happens I decided to do a complete disk wipe and fresh install. Laptop is running well, but still this problem persists.
Well, it just happened again and so I went into the System Log looking for answers. Here's what I have found:
Kernel Power>Event ID 42>Task Category 64. General tab: the system is entering sleep. Sleep reason: button or lid
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Quick guess, erratically behaving power button or lid switch.

Solution: go to power settings and turn off options to sleep the computer by shutting the lid or pressing the power button.
If you wish to troubleshoot more, turn off only one of the options first and see if the problem disappears.

Broken lid switch wouldn't be the first time, altough I don't remember/know what kind of switch that laptop has and if it could be fixed easily or not at all.

KLF, I did as you suggested, changing the power options to Do Nothing when pushing power button and when closing lid. The problem hasn't gone away, it's just different now. The random sleep issue continues, but now the laptop awakens from that sleep state instantly. In other words, it goes to sleep but before I can let out a few expletives it will turn back on immediately. Previously, before I made those settings changes, it would go to sleep and I would need to wake it manually with a push of the power button.

Clearly, it must be a hardware issue, no? Power button or lid?

By the way, this issue started when the laptop was returned to me from HP. I had shipped it to them to repair a broken hinge. I'm sure this issue is related to that repair.

I would say the same. I'm too lazy today to look for repair manual but usually lid switch and power button are on the top cover that has to be removed to access hinges.

I just have no idea what could be broken to cause behaviour like that. Perhaps not the button/cable but the connector on motherboard side :(

Maybe it is really just the contacts between the power button / mobo. Maybe the ribbons are not in properly. Or something got between the button. Try reconnecting them.
