I recently was excited to learn that sleep mode drains the battery very slowly, so i started using it a lot more instead of taking time to hibernate (in between classes and such)...

Anyways, Now my laptop will only turn off the LCD when i close the lid, it wont go into sleep mode... however....

when i OPEN the lid it goes into sleep mode! If i close the lid again it wakes up!
This is sooo annoying. If i put it in sleep mode manually and shut the lid fast before it actually sleeps, it stays in sleep mode, but the second i pick up the laptop, or move it, it awakes, until i open it again and it goes back to sleep...

Is there a mechanical switch broken? Why would it do this?

Probably a broken lid switch. Only way youll find out is if you do a clean install to rule out a possible software issue

Id turn sleep mode when lid closed and just put it to sleep manually and close the lid

Do you still have warranty on your laptop? Seems like something went haywire with the display.

No, my warranty ended 6 months ago

I've reinstalled operating systems multiple times. Same problem with XP, Vista and Ubuntu.

Does anyone know where the switch is located? I look of the plate that covers the speakers and stuff, and i didn't see it under there. Is it part of the screen assembly?

The instructions to pull apart your laptop will be on the HP website, shouldnt be that hard to replace.
