Just bought a HP dv5 1159se not very happy about the start up time and page switching ability. It seems very slow bringing up programs such as MSWord, MS Excel and also closing down windows. Is this normal for this machine? I have today to return it, then it's mine forever! Help. rfelts![]()

allfiredup Notebook Virtuoso
The dv5-1159se specifications look pretty good...similar to the vast majority of under $1k mainstream/budget notebooks.
The spec sheet shows-
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 processor
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics
Intel 5100AGN wireless card
Especially with 4GB of RAM (and a 64-bit version of Vista that can take advantage of it), you should be seeing more than adequate performance. It should load web pages almost instantaneously and apps should open in no more than a few seconds!
I'm willing to bet you have a few culprits draining your performance...
1- Have you uninstalled all unnecessary programs and software trials that were pre-installed (aka- crapware or bloatware)? If not, that's the first step you should take! Download Revo Uninstalled (FREE) at this link- http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html It will display the list of all software installed and allow you to run the unistaller for each one. Then it will search for orphan/junk files that may be scattered and/or hidden on your hard drive and DELETE them! It's a great program!
2- Still using Revo Uninstaller, disable any unnecessary startup items. The second icon in Revo is 'Tools', click it and the first item you'll see in the window below is 'Autorun Manager'. Remove the checkmark beside anything that doesn't need to load automatically when you log in to Vista. Each item on that list delays your startup by at least a few seconds!
3- Click on the Start button, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools then Disk Cleanup. It will prompt you to choose a drive, select C: and click OK. It takes a minute or two to scan, then simply click OK to allow it to delete all the items (checked by default).
4- Click on Control Panel, System & Maintenance, then Power Options. Verify that you are using the 'High Performance' setting. If not, make that change.
That should make some strides in getting you running faster. Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions! -

Another alternative is a Clean Install. Here's a guide.
