Hello, I have just recently bought a HP dv6324us about a week ago. This is my first laptop and from what i can tell it seems awsome. The specs are AMD Turion Dual Core X2 1.6. 1GB of memory and im running Vista with Nividia 6150. Just browsing the internet and doing simple tasks it seems very sluggish. I have removed as much bloatware and unneccessary programs of my knowledge. I know i have missed many things that are slowing down my notebook. On my vista desktop i have the CPU gadget and just loading Internet Explore puts the CPU all the way up to 100% and with the internet and with winamp running my RAM is at about 60%. Just for a brand new laptop i though it would be a lot quicker...........its almost as slow as my 4yr old desktop. Im also running the Norton trial that came with my computer. Ive read that norton bogs down your computer a good bit. Would AVG be a good replacement for Norton? What other things can i do or remove to boost performance?
    THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!
    -sam

I'd get rid of Norton for sure. A good alternative is NOD32 -- recognized as not only a very effective anti-virus program, but also as one of the most efficient (uses very little memory and CPU time).

I would definitely upgrade to 2GB of RAM...1GB with Vista is not really the best, especially since the OS by itself gobbles up 500-600MB.

i removed Norton and using AVG on my notebook and it works fine... i would suggest:

    1. download CCleaner (freeware) to clean up your cache and registry.. there are other registry cleaners but i prefer this freeware...

    2. disable System Restore (i use this before but restoring some applications mess up my registry and became unusable)

    3. upgrade your RAM...

    4. run Disk Cleanup and defrag your hd.

    5. remove any unnecessary Services and StartUp applications

    ...

also click on the start button and type in search MSCONFIG then enter, click the start up tab, and uncheck any programs you don't want windows vista to start when the operating system first loads.
