Envy 17 users, have you been able to overclock your 5850? The card itself is massively capable of overclocking, being able to exceed the m5870. M15x guys have been getting insane overclocks on theirs...

Yet when I tried to overclock mine, even slightly, with the AMD GPU clock tool, it crashed, either immediately, or while playing a game (after about 10 minutes). Is mine just faulty? What's the deal? GPU-Z reports my stock clocks as 500/900, (lower than the stock 625/1000 of the 5850, and yes, powerplay is off). Mine couldn't even handle getting clocked back up to stock...

So, nobody? Maybe a future BIOS update will put the clocks back up to stock?

550/1150 is pretty stable on the 5830. I would imagine you should be able to go higher on the 5850, although it is cut from the same die (desktop 5770). the voltage on the 5830 in the Envy 15 is the same (0.9v).

only a couple of games I've noticed I had to adjust to 450/1050 (Civ5, F:NV)

max that i've got is 550/1000 for 100% stable. everything higher crashes the driver. According to mentioned above forum, owners dell 5850 has >1.0V by default, and overcloack it to 1.15v w safe.. so right now i try to find any info how to increase voltage to 1.0V.
0.9V isn't enough go more then 550 with core clock as i can see :((

Try to search on the forums, Overclocking 5650 and read Page 8 onwards. There is a way to mod the vBIOS via the Insyde BIOS provided by HP. The thread is probably on page three of the Gaming section on the forums.

Any progress so far? Or are we just going to have hope for a BIOS update from HP?

Also, has anybody had any luck with overclocking their i5 or i7? I have a 450m in my 1010NR, and apparently some guy with an Envy 14 and 450m was able to overclock his using setFSB...

Also, has MSI Afterburner yielded any results? In order to use Afterburner with AMD/ATI cards, after installing the program, go to the program folder, open MSIAfterburner.cfg with notepad, go to the [ATIADLHAL] section and change the line EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 0 to EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 1, save and exit.

Last night, using MSI Afterburner I was able to clock my 5850 @ 550/1025. I ran the ATITool artifact tester which didn't seem like it did much.

BTW, I just received this yesterday and it was ordered a few weeks ago during the $400 off deal. I have heard that OC on these 5850's was difficult if not impossible but it seemed to work okay. Could these new ones have some revision changes?

nothing new((( I posted some threads in different forums...studying how to modify HP bios, other experience with HP notes....what i understand now...

the max you can go with 0.9V is 550/1025 and get 11700 in 3dmark06 in my case))

but according to other note owner, like dell alienware m15x with 5850, they have more then 1.0V and get change to 1.15V with good cooling.. so in the end they modify core/memory up to 900/1100 (crazyy people)..so finally reach >14000 in 3dmarks06..

so, my tries to increase of Voltage was unsuccessful, with flashed modified vbios i still have 0.9V

wanted fo flash vbios from other company, like dell or msi, but "^^^ i second this, flashing it with dell bios may brick it. i know i tried to flash a dell bios on a clevo card and bricked it."
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m15x/514549-what-best-way-overclock-ati-5850-a-8.html

according to this forum 5850 Non Ref. Bios Mod. - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net
it less risky to flash hp vbios of 5870..but i can't find hp 5870 vbios..

this forum also prove that we can brick the card http://www.overclock.net/ati/671675-how-flash-your-5850-bios.html

any other options for us? hellppp plzzz

Can someone take a minute and post an original Envy 17 5850 bios if you have it? My copy got corrupted. For some reason now, at just a desktop GPUz shows GPU Clock and Default clock as being the same but when I look under the sensors tab it shows 400/900. When I open a window such as my computer I get some flashing/streaks at the very 1/4 inch of the display. If I load up ATI GPU Clok tool and I adjust the GPU speed from 400 to 405 that flashing/streak goes away so now I am left wondering if the RBE modded BIOS is acting funky.

Should the GPUZ clocks showing the current clock speed as well as the default? Trying to understand why they are the same but different from what is on the sensor tab.

    EDIT:

Okay, so I found an original BIOS, flashed it to that and now everything is perfect so I am wondering if there is something wrong. I even tried 525/950 instead of 550/1000 and I get that little hitch in the top 1/4 of the screen. Back on OEM and all is well. Very strange indeed.

    EDIT #2
I figured out what is causing the ripple effect. Using a modded BIOS on the desktop display, no 3D the card is clocked at 405/900. If I open Computer and click/drag it to the point where my pointer touches the top of the display there is a water droplet ripple effect that Windwos 7 does. That graphic effect happens, that is when the top 1/4 inch gets wired for a split second. It almost acts like the memory is overclocked but it even does this at 510/920. Back on stock BIOS it doesn't do that. Also, at 550/1000 under 100% utilization GPU hits 80 C. OUCH.
