Did you do a fresh OS install? If you did, the most forgotten drivers to re-install seem to be the Quick Launch/Quick Touch buttons, LAN, Card Reader, Infrared (for the remote), IDT &/or Intel Sound, and perhaps the WebCam.

I take it also that you’ve run Windows update? If not, it will often clear up missing drivers without much fuss.

    Hope that helps.

See here. Besides a clean installation of Windows, those will be the only things you will need to install. And under no circumstances let Windows Update mess with your drivers, it'll screw everything up.

I know for a fact that you won't get any "unknown devices" with that setup. If the bluetooth is still missing then, you may have a defective unit and you'll have to send it back. For me, Windows 7 detected the bluetooth on its own. And please go 64-bit, you'll thank me later.

Good to see you’re getting your problem sorted out and that HP is sending you a “new card”. From my experience that’s fairly unusual…. so good on ya… because they usually just tell you to send the entire unit. Still, while you’re waiting for the part, I think if I had the time, and since you just got the unit, I might do a restore from the recovery partition just to see if perhaps something in the factory install didn’t go well. At least that way you’d know for sure if it were a software or hardware issue.

Also, I agree with Unique that it’s rarely a good idea to blindly let windows “update” drivers. That said however, when searching for a “missing” driver, for which you have know idea what it is that’s missing, Windows Update will often find and identify it. You then have the option of installing the Microsoft supplied driver or using one of your own…. since you’ve now identified what’s missing. This doesn’t always work…. but it’s a very useful and reasonably painless place to start when trying to help folks sort things out over such an indirect medium.

At-any-rate, good luck with your DV4t. We’ve had one in the house since Christmas and it’s been flawless.

Nice of them. :) But then go and do a clean install of Vista 64, it'll be MUCH better. Oh, just saw the above post... Don't use the recovery partition. The default install is really messed up. As a matter of fact i wiped mine... But you will probably need it if you ever need to send the laptop under warranty, so keep it, but do yourself the favor of installing Vista 64. Or Windows 7 if you're willing to take beta software. I have Win 7 and i like it a lot.

    Step one…. Solve the problem.

No guarantee… but the recover partition shouldn’t be flawed since it’s a separate image on a segregated partition.

But…..Running a system recovery from the recovery partition “will” wipe the primary partition and put a fresh factory image install on your system and “could” sort out any software related issues caused by a bad factory OS image transfer.

If… a recovery install solved your issue, you’d then know for sure that you’re “missing device” issue was not a defective hardware component.

    Or….

You can wait for the part to arrive and see what happens. If the part replacement fails to solve the issue you can either continue to search for drivers, do the above recovery, do a fresh install, or call HP....again :( .... and they will likely ask you to do a recovery.

Once you’ve solved the problem…. you can then obviously do whatever you wish with the OS, recovery partition, software setup folder etc etc etc. As you probably know, a fresh OS install (no matter the flavor) is always nice to rid your system of all the included bloatware and you can increase drive space available by deleting the recovery partition. It is not required to return your unit for HP warranty service.

Your "Unknown Device" could be the HP Protect Smart hard drive protection. I did a clean install when I got the dv4 and had that "Unknown Device" for a long time. I eventually Googled and found out it was the HP Protect Smart software/hardware.

well unfortunately i spoke to soon, the tech thought it was just an adapter that can be easy be removed, so instead he found out that it soldered onto the motherboard, he suggested that i return the notebook for a full refund and build another one or even better or cheaper instead of waiting for weeks of repair. how sad i only had it for 24 hours and now i got sent it back and wait probably another 2 or 3 weeks

Tough deal. But before you send it back, try doing a recovery from the recovery partition. You've got nothing to loose.

Make sure you are running off house power and your battery is fully charged. Press F11 during system start. Follow the screens through to "recover your system without creating disks, without backing up data, or using Microsoft backup. Start the recovery and then do not mess with it until it's finished. It may take an hour or more...

If this doesn't solve your "device" problems.... send it back.

They just got the unit, haven't done a clean install yet, and are experiencing "missing device" issues. But you're absolutely right, the Protect Smart driver is also one of those "missing devices" that are often forgotten during a fresh install. I even forgot to add it to the list. :)

If a recovery doesn't fix their issue..... and it's brand new out of the box.... then I'd guess it's time to send it back.

Well..... I guess that's that. Send it back asap and search for a new HP coupon. Back to school is starting up and there should be some very good deals coming along shortly.

Again.... tough deal..... but better now than later. Also, as an after thought, I'd guess that if you contacted a case manager and explained the issue with your brand new 1 day old HP, that they would replace it for you and perhaps even upgrade a component or two in process. It's worth a try.

Be nice.... don't demand.... just explain the issues.... and whimper alot :p

I think these numbers are still current.

    HP - 877-917-4380
Extension 94 goes to Notebook case managers.

If you have any names or work order numbers from your prior customer service conversations, have them handy along with your order number & unit serial number. Explain the order date, arrival date, and what has happened with the unit to whom ever answers. Tell them how long you’ve spent on the phone trying to solve the issue, the return suggestion by customer service, the deal with your coupon, and that you’d like to be assigned a case manager for replacement or exchange.

If you’re lucky you’ll get a case manager right away, but chances are they will transfer you to a number and you’ll have to leave a voice message. Write down the name if you get one so you can call back if need be. If all goes well you "could" have a CTO replacement in 7 to 10 days.

Good Luck.... and again.... be patient
