Vista's just about here..
I know They'll have some new machines. There's no way they can peddle their crap 256MB Ram options, ****e video cards that couldn't run Aero, and puny HDD space (40GB).
Anyone know what might be up with HP? I'm in no way shape or form going to throw money at them until they get the new models out.

But when will vista provide a real performance benefit, other than bloated eye candy?

There are a couple of new systems coming out for Vista, but mostly existing systems will continue to be offered with Vista as the preinstalled OS. Existing systems and graphics cards are all fine for Vista given enough RAM. I don't know of any current HP systems that would be problematic for Vista. Anyway, they can't offer/sell these systems till January 30, so a little patience...

Is that true that vista is a great leap in technology and convenience? Or it is just the same difference between win2k and winxp plus some eye candies?
I remain distrustful of MS's bragging about its new release. Sure it is better than xp but I don't see the need for a hasty upgrade. -
yeah from what i know (i dont have vista yet), it looks like windows vista has improved very much from windows xp.
here is a good article, 10 reasons to upgrade to vista, and 10 reasons to not upgrade vista. Go here and click "download"

I've been running all of my computers on Vista for about 2 months now and LOVE it.
The eye-candy is one reason, because it looks a lot smoother than XP.
The improved security is without much better than XP. Pretty much NOTHING can access the system without you knowing about it.
Improved system tools and searches are another, and the new layout of main features is a nice step away from the XP platform. -
It's true that when using the aero interface, there is definitely some more "eye candy" than in previous versions, but that hardly makes up a significant portion of the changes Vista brings... it's just the changes people notice first.
The whole OS has undergone a major overhaul starting from the much more secure Server 2003 codebase. Kernel access is much more restricted (especially on the x64 editions) than it was in XP, and major strides have been made in preventing users from accidentally installing spyware/viruses without their knowledge.
Also, performance is improved noticeably on newer hardware. Particularly, systems with dual-core processors and 2 GB or more of RAM feel MUCH more responsive than similar XP systems. Systems with the more common 1 GB of RAM and/or fast single core processors usually feel slightly faster than XP, but it varies more from system to system.
Again, I was a beta-tester and may be said to have a bias in favor of Vista, but I've also been using Vista for much longer than most people outside of Microsoft and have no problem recommending it to those with appropriate hardware.
That's an interesting article, and I agree with many of their points. I really wish they would have left the whole DRM debate out of it, however, rather than furthering the DRM FUD that has been going around about Vista. Vista does not add DRM to anything... it simply supports the DRM that content providers mandate as part of some formats (HD DVD, Blu-ray). Without that support, those formats simply wouldn't play. Also, I disagree with their statement about needing a new video card. Games that require PS4.0 and other new features are A LONG ways off. Even upcoming Vista DX10 games such as Crysis and Halo 2 won't require a new PS4.0 graphics card in order to play -- they just support the new features if you have them available. Otherwise, a good article. -
will the 256 mb gpu work very well with vista?
-
It just wont run DX10. -
wait wats DX10?
-
-
just a little clarification there. -
The DX10 features that people are talking about are things like Pixel Shader 4.0 which can only be supported on Vista with DX10. DX10 games (initially) may support those new features, but definitely will not require them. -
I should have clarified myself a bit better...
-
ummm... so i will be completely satisfied with this dedicated gpu with vista?
-
I don't know much about the 7400, but if my Intel GMA950 can run Aero and all that jazz, you should be fine.
-
ok thanks
So, when're the new machines coming out already?
