So... is it just cosmetic between the R4000 and zv6000?

Well, not really, but still. Whichever I pick up is going to have the following:

    – AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3200+ (2.0GHz/512KB L2 Cache)
    – 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    – 128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)
    – 256MB DDR SDRAM (1x256MB)
    – 40 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    – DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    – Integrated 56K Modem + 10/100 Ethernet LAN
    – 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I have no plans to burn DVDs since I don't copy movies and the only other necessity would be storage, and I have a 60gb 5400 Hitachi HD in a currently dead laptop. Also got a usable memory stick, but since I'm not sure I can use it, I'm just going to assume I'll need to buy one from newegg. Probably crack open the thing at some point and put a pair of 512s in. I'm no gamer, all I really do is emulate old SNES/NES games and occasionally N64, so 1GB of memory is certainly plenty.

Anyway, the thing is this: that configuration is $743 with the R4000, and $695 if I go the zv6000 route (hooray educational discount). I cannot pick a favorite style-wise between the two, so if that's the only factor 'twixt them I'll obviously go for the zv6000 and save some cash that can be used getting memory.

If anyone can give me a reason why one is structurally superior to the other I'd be forever grateful. And this is definitely the greatest place on the 'net for notebook info, I'd probably have picked up a Dell 2200 by now without it.

The differences are cosmetic. Buy whichever is cheaper and/or looks better to you.

They take standard PC2700 SODIMMs. One of the two SODIMM slots is easily accessable and will be empty in a 256MB configuration.

Any difference if I pick up a DDR or DDR2 SODIMM? I'm a-lookin' around on Newegg.

Yes, one will work, while the other won't. the ZV6000 & R4000 only support DDR. DDR2 will not fit into the unit (keyed differently).

    Rock rock on.

Looks like I'm fairly settled on the zv6000 then, with the above specifications. Thanks y'all.
