    Hello All:

First off, thanks for all the information that helped me choose the nc8430. It just arrived and looks amazing, pics don't do it justice. I've heard a lot about bloatware but when I went to check, the taskbar lists only 35. Do I still need to reformat or can I just leave the system as is? And if I do reformat what are the essential software components I should install?

    Thanks again.

No...the nc8430 does not contain any preinstalled crapware...35 processes sounds about right for an fresh XP install.

I bought mine from pcsuperdeals. They had the cheapest price last week, and they shipped the notebook the same day.

Is anyone able to post a link detailing the software I should install? (The HP Recommended Software option seems to have a lot of programs I may not need.) I know I read the thread but can't seem to find it. Thanks.

I don't have the link, but this is what I recommend:
InterVideo WinDVD (used to watch movies)
    Sonic MyDVD
    HP Battery Check

Also, make sure the following programs are installed:
    HP Mobile Data Protection
    Quick Launch Buttons
    Windows Media Player 10

If you use the HP security features (Fingerprint Reader, Smart Card), you may need one or more of these installed:
HP ProtectTools Security Manager (Required if you use any of the items below)
    BIOS Configuration for HP ProtectTools
    Embedded Security for HP ProtectTools
    Credential Manager for HP ProtectTools

These have to be downloaded from the Support & Driver page for the nc8430 if you want them. Again, the HP ProtectTools manager will be needed:
Smart Card Security for HP ProtectTools
Device Access Manager for HP ProtectTools

You might want to look at this, but I haven't used it. Some might.
    HP Client Manager Software

    And uninstall this application:
HP Wireless Assistant (Windows Zero Configuration is better IMHO)

Most of the time that is because of crapware installed. If you did a fresh install on the HP nc8430 and installed all the drivers, you'd get the same exact installation that the nc8430 has straight from the factory. No need to unless you're REALLY OCD...I'm usually one of them! But I just left it alone.
