Hello guys. I haven't posted here in a while. I seem to have a problem with my Blu-Ray drive. It worked fine when I first got my laptop. I only have one movie, which I watch on occasion, but when I tried to play it recently, the drive will not recognize the disc. It plays regular DVD movies OK. I have tried searching HP's site (and the rest of the internet) for firmware drivers or updates, but no no avail. I have made a significant number of software updates to my PC, so after a few system restores, I have done a complete system recovery. I used the discs that I ordered with my Laptop at first. That took about 6 hours to do, but that did not solve the problem. I then did another system recovery using the recovery partition on my Hard drive. That took about a half an hour, but still, no luck. Any advice?

Is quickplay installed on your laptop? If so, it is the only program hp provides that can play blu-ray movies.

Most likely the disc encryption is blocking play on the PC drive. Download slysoft "anydvd" for HD and it will remove all the protection BS and you can play the disk with no issue...........and also make a backup if the need be...... ;)

UPDATE: NOPE, anyDVD did not work. It says there is no disk in drive, when in fact there is my Blu-Ray disk in the drive.

This seems to be the general problem... The computer isn't even recognizing the fact that I have a Blu-Ray disk in the drive.

It sounds like the drive needs to be replaced...

Well I might have the solution for you! This EXACT thing happened with my 9700T. I took a Q-Tip and cleaned the blu-ray lens. That's all nothing magical, and just wiped over it a few times, and voila, the blu-ray was being read and worked again. I can pretty much guarantee, that's the problem not disc encryption or anything crazy like that. The lens probably got some dust and needs cleaning. Remember DVDs use another laser, so that's why it's still being able to be read, which was a hint to me when I cleaned mine that it was most likely the lens not picking up the blu-ray.

You may be right. I got this laptop in mid-March. I wonder if its still under warranty.

    Jonathan360:

Thanks for the tip. I gave it a shot. I even rubbed some alchohol (evaporates very fast) on both lenses. Still a no go. WHy won;t they just make the firmware for the drive available? Does anyone else with this model have a device manager that reads the same values for this drive as I stated above?

I wonder if you can convince them that you can replace the drive yourself if they send one to you so that you don't have to take the risk of sending the entire thing back....

should be the pick up lens. dvd disk uses a red laser to read while the bd disk use a blue laser to read. does your player have two lenses?

You should probably try another movie too... go rent one from Blockbuster or something. Just my $0.02.

Well as I posted before, I have had that same issue. I ended up just cleaning the disc lens a bunch and it finally worked.
