Ok guys I just knowticed after watching multiple videos on youtube and then looking at my laptop that my hp envy 14 beats edition is not shiny around the bottom half of the unit.. what I mean is that on multiple youtube videos many people have a shiny wrap around of chrome on the sides and front on the bottom portion of the notebook. Looking at mine it is just black like the rest of the computer is this normal??
-
What is the model of your Envy?
-
They changed the design a little a while back
-
Im not positive where to check the model # maybe you could tell me, my computer is a envy 14 beats edition got it in the mail last thursday, it has an i7 720, 8 gigs of ram, 640 gig 7200 rpm drive, so maybe by doing custom configurations there is not a specific model #
-
i see ... didn't know that because I don't think I have see one without the chrome. Thanks for the info
-
Or maybe they recently changed it. Did you order your Envy directly from HP, or did you order it from a store/refurb/somebody else?
-
direct from hp
-
Oh.
In that case, HP probably changed the design a little, possibly to make the beats look more uniform -
wow this is cool could you post pics please? I miss my old beats.....
-
If they only got rid of the Beats logos everywhere I would have bought that one.
-
There should be a sticker on the bottom of your laptop or under battery. It has both serial and model/part numbers.
-
Ok guys I will post pictures soon.
-
I was also wondering about the chrome and how it looks. black on the side would be cool though
-
Wth. Wrong place. Sorry.
-
That looks so much better IMHO. I never liked the chrome. It's hard to use chrome tastefully.
-
I like it as well, just dawned on me 4 days after I got it and realized mine wasn't chrome lol
-
wow interesting, when did you buy this? (recently?)
edit: looks plasticy lol
edit2: talked to HP and they said the CTO model at the moment is chrome -
I ordered it the end of march from hp and got it on the 7th of april
-
wow cool, is it metal all around?
My order is in the mail atm and checked with HP person about my order and she confirmed its chrome. -
It feels like a very tough plastic, it doesn't flex at all when you push it and my phone camera doesn't do it much justice, it doesn't look cheap at all, I am just extremely confused why mine is not chrome because I just watched someone unbox there unit on youtube that they uploaded to youtube 6 days ago and there unit was chrome... I will probably give hp a call tomorrow since tech support can't help with my problem and the sales team closed at 5:30. I have not seen the chrome unit in person so I couldn't give an honest judgement what I like more but if my unit was built wrong I feel weird about that, I just don't want to go through the hassle of sending it in and waiting 2 more weeks because I need a computer for school.
-
yea I actually have no idea which would look better. not big fan of chrome but many people like it so I have to wait and see when mine comes in. and I would just call like you mentioned and ask for explanation on the model/design.
-
The "chrome" like trim on the sides is aluminum, actually it doesn't look at all like chrome.
This is chrome:
This is aluminum:
-
from the videos I saw, looks like dark chrome. it might not necessarily be pure chrome; from your suggestions probably shiny unbrushed aluminum...
edit1: LOL at chrome picture and aluminum.. -
It's more then likely satin polished aluminum trim for the regular Envy.
And power coated aluminum trim for the Beats. -
Wow that looks much better than the dark metal look the other ones have. I would jump on that in a heart beat if i had some money!!!
-
actually I remember clearly that the HP lady said mine had the chrome around; not sure if she was referring to my question because I called it chrome or it was actual chrome around the notebook.
-
There is also Fn + Esc. That will give you both on your screen. It's great when tech support is on the phone, because you don't have to turn over your laptop while it's on, manage the phone and hunt down the number.
-
this is a cool video on the topic
YouTube - HP Envy 14 Beats Edition: ?????????? -
I'm sure you already realize that the regular ENVY 14 and Beats edition have a different trim. Chrome actually refers to the look of things rather than using actual chromium nowadays (unless you're talking about cars). And the Beats edition did have a chrome-like finish, I believe the finish was probably like the "black ice" finish on other products. I'm sure most people new the difference between chrome and non-chrome finishes.
And OP, I don't know why you would get the idea your ENVY was built incorrectly. Pretty sure there is only one trim design for the ENVY 14 and you just got one with a different material/finish (one that matches with the laptop). My question is, is it the same material/texture the rest of the laptop is? They could have just decided to coat the aluminum like they did with the rest of the laptop. -
This video is from back in the old days when the beats had headphones. ahh those were the days.. You can definitely see the difference in the dark chrome finish on that one vs the black in the pics posted. props to hp on a solid black laptop, then quickly take those props away since there is no high res.

found the model info HP ENVY 14t-1200 CTO Beats Edition Notebook PC (XQ104AV)...........has anyone seen an envy like mine with the black finish yet?
-
Yes I have seen one like yours. The weird thing is, when HP released the 15.6 inch version of the envy, the generation before this one, it featured all black everything (in the words of jay-z). But clearly, yours is the 14.5 inch version.

The strange thing is, I can't find any images of this thing actually existing. -
Where have you seen it?
-
I like mine a lot now because everything blends perfectly, because I just got my slice battery today and since its black it look perfect lined up to the black border, but thats an interesting find maybe I got one of the first new changed models... maybe they re going back to more of the original colors, and also I was just thinking for who ever it was saying they called hp and the lady confirmed his unit would be chrome how would she really know? what I am saying is that if they just changed the color from chrome to black its not that big of a change and if some tech support lady just sees an old pic of the beats edition on her computer she probably just goes by that and says its chrome. I guess we will have to wait and see until more people who just got the beats edition say if there unit is chrome or black.
-
Mine just came in, ill check if its shiny "powder coated aluminum" when I open it
-
It wouldn't be so strange for them to go back. The 15.6 variant had a lot of style things I like, the keyboard was all in lower case for instance. Also, back when voodoo was the one making the envy (which was availible in 20-30 colors if I remember right) the default model was all black. After HP bought them up, then ate their team and made the envy more affordable, well that would bring us to where we are today with the envy.
-
i can confirm ITS BLACK ALL AROUND. picked up today and looks awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
-
yup, just got mine too and BLACK ALL AROUND! and touchpad seems fine, though not up to mac's level... loving this laptop [:
-
good to know that mine is normal now lol
-
I've never understood why people think the trackpad sucks.
-
I'm with you on this. I love it. The two finger scrolling, the pinch-to-zoom, the dragging, the sensitivity, the clicking, and everything else works great.
-
Lol i dont have a problem with the trackpad its pretty cool. and I think its because I usually tap to click anyways (others complan about clicking and moving mouse at same time) and the trackpad is perfect for that plus I made it so two-finger tap is right click.
-
With EAFD's trackpad guide i wouldn't change a thing. It's perfect. Not that it was just horrible to begin with but it does make a world of difference.
Something Very odd....
