Is there something currently wrong with the dv5t that I should know about? I keep hearing some people say there's a bad chip and that's why the 9600m gt isn't offered anymore.

This is making me a little worried.

HP removed the 9600M GT option from the DV5 so it can avoid competition within its own line-up, so if you want a better GPU, you have to opt for the HDX 16.

Yep. As far as I know, there is no hardware issues with the 9600M GT in the dv5t right now. It does run rather hot, however, but the main reason HP pulled it was because the HDX series is the one targeted towards high performance, and also because they were introducing the dv6t.
