    Hi guys I have a HP dv5 1008ca or dv5z, w/ vista
The problem is that when I plug in my headphones the sound coming from the laptop speakers does NOT mute. I had this laptop for about a month or two and I know that when I plug in my headphones the laptop speakers should mute, not playing at the same time Any ideas??

    I tried,
    updating drivers
change settings on hardware and sound configurations

Someone please help me. I'd rather NOT talk to HP technical support again, they are terrible, or at least the one I talked with.

Get a emergancy CD eject pin or a very well straightened paper clip and put that in the headphone socket making sure its all the way in and touching the one of the internal side contacts. This should replicate a headphone plug being inserted in the jack and determine if its the jack connection thats at fault or not. Hope you follow that ok!

P.S. I have had many experiences with HP support as I work for a HP reseller company. They make me age very fast! Untill I started working for my company I had dark brown hair.... now its getting very grey! LOL!

You should be able to enable and/or disable the different output sources through the audio program for the device that came with the laptop. Also...did you try both headphone jacks to see if it would mute? I'm not sure of the program, but it's on the dv5z. It has a black rectangular UI, and it should have the option to enable or disable each individual output device.

Everway: Sorry I dont fully understand how the paper clip method works.

Waterwizard. I can change the mute settings through control panel>sound and from IDT audio control settings. Yes I have tried all the jacks and all the other configurations to no avail :(

I don't think you can resolve the sound issue without taking your laptop back to HP Tech Support. Lots of Compaqs and Pavilions ship with this defect where the audio port is improperly connected to the motherboard. Take it to HP service center. They will repair it for free if you do have the warranty.

The problem probably is from audio board. It cannot close the ouput to internal speaker when a headphone is used. You can try to disconnect and reconnect the cable to audio board. A defect audio board can cause the system has no sound to speaker.

Follow this guide to access the audio board.
If the problem doesn't go away, you need to change the audio board.

Try to reseat the cable from audio board.
    Follow the instruction from here.
You need a new audio board if the problem is the same.
