I've had this laptop for less than a week, and I really like it, but it has started doing something very strange: there is a brief low-pitched buzz from the right speaker every minute or so. It sounds like there's an angry bee in there trying to get out.

The noise is not related to system sounds, and normal sound coming from the speakers is fine.

Any ideas? I have started a case with HP Support, but I wanted to run it by you guys...

i have the same exact noise, its on a dv2000 with AMD Turion. its pretty common problem, there seem to be some fixes for it, but non worked for me! just search the forum for "noise" and its not limited to HP by any means, even macbooks, dells, sony, acer, they all share it!! i personally can't take it anymore.

HP Emailed right back with a link to a page telling me that the power capacitors were buzzing, and recommending that I try a new power scheme.

I switched to Portable/Laptop as recommended, but that didn't change anything (of course). I replied telling them that... and that I considered "buzzing capacitors" a manufacturing defect, so that they would need to repair or replace the laptop if that were the problem.
The same guy wrote back, recommending that I replace the video driver and run a HDD diagnostic; I installed the driver he indicated and ran the diagnostic (it came up fine) without fixing the noise.

Meanwhile, I may have actually stumbled across the problem: I muted the microphones! I got the impression they were picking up keybord noises, sounds from the display hinges, and other vibrations within the bezel. With the mikes muted, no noises.

If this is the problem, should I live with it, or force HP to fix the microphones?

(out) Audio play back of the mics should always be muted anyways.

(in) Recording of the mics shouldn't have to be muted.

If things are that way around and it still buzzes, then get it fixed.

I warn you though... I had a lot of fun trying to get my machine fixed.

The mic/sound card were not working correctly at all. All in all it took them seven weeks or so to fix the problem. In the end they gave me a whole new but better notebook, plus a PMP and a logitech fusion webcam.

Don't bother with the online techies, they're a waste of time. Talk to a MAN on the phone and tell him that you want it checked out!

I had to email Mark Hurd and tell him that I'd be taking HP to court before anything started happening after 5 weeks. (I'm in the EU, and I know my rights! :) )
