My speakers occasionally make a very harsh, annoying sound. This happened on my previous two HP laptops. It's been happening with my Envy since I attached my new external drive and installed the software, which I uninstalled and reinstalled. It happens far less, but it still happens. Does anyone know how to go about stopping this. :-(

Sorry to hear of your negative experience. The Envy has not been the breeziest technological experience for me, but I overall love it.

The BEAT sound sucks - my previous laptop Toshiba had a much louder and better quality sound. Here it is hard to hear anything on envy!

Does anyone know how I can ensure I have the latest drivers. I really do want to end this harsh stuttering sound. It sucks if you want to record from the computer or if you want to record TV.

Latest drivers aren't always the best. Sometimes older drivers are better. You would have to experiment.

Though, before you do, I would recommend using drive imaging software (like Acronis, ghost, or Macrium Reflect). Especially when it comes to driver experiments.

Just look in device manager under the sound section to see what driver version you have. Then you can search HP's driver FTP and the sound card manufacturer's website for alternate drivers.

You can google "IDT92HD80 driver" for alternate drivers.

I would actually install the original drivers first, and then if it doesn't work check something else out.

When troubleshooting mine, HP tech support had me uninstall the audio driver. When I restarted it appeared to reinstall itself. From there we did a BIOS update and System Recovery.

Give em a call, but be prepared to deal with some attitude.

The first lady I spoke to hung up on me after about 2 or 3 minutes.
I guess you better kiss their ars rather than the other way around.

Win7 might install some drivers by default. So, it's a good idea to uninstall it, and then restart the system - check. If the problem still exists, then install the latest drivers.

But I believe they are a little bit different on different envy models, like 17,14, etc.

Thanks. One was a huge lemon. The other one (the i7) was flawed by design, something I was unaware of when I made the purchase.

The problem disappears if and only if I remove my external drive's software. This is so odd. It sucks, too, since it appeared to have some enviable features. For those of you who might also be interested in this drive, it's the 2TB USB 3.0 Seagate model Best Buy and Walmart put on sale for Black Friday.

Edited to add: Thus far, the decision to install it on my other hard drive has been successful.
