Do Western Digital notebook drives not come with SMART enabled? I can't seem to find this information anywhere on the web. From Device Manager my hard drive is WDC WD1600BEVS-60RST SCSI Disk Device
Any suggestions?
Thanks

It does I think. I have the exact same hard drive but I think the SATA driver doesn't let you access the SMART commands correctly. I have the same hard drive and couldn't get the info through Speedfan, HDTune, smartmontools, or sandra. I was able to get it when I first reformatted to WinXP and had the SATA disabled and did not install the SATA drivers. But I think Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Diagnostics utility shows it correctly (at least the temperature sensor data changes).
Keep me posted if you find out something new. -
i think all new drives have this enabled, i dont see why they shouldnt
my dv9000t uses seagate drives which show the SMART info in speedfan -
Hi
I am a long time reader of this forum, but this time I am new as a writer.
I have the same problem with my dv2310us. I have WD 160GB hard drive and so far I have found only one software that reports SMART data. It's Astra32, it's not a freeware and currently I am using a trial version. I am not sure if the reports are 100% correct, I think that only temperature of my hdd is reported correctly. There is no other software that shows SMART data for this hdd, so I can't verify astra32 reports.
Is reading of SMART data blocked somehow by WD, HP, or this is MS Vista that causes problems?
By the way, only astra32 reports temperature of my hdd and in many reports it says that my hdd is overheating (the temp. exceeds 50C). I tried many programs for temp. monitoring and all of them worked well for CPU temp. monitoring, none (except astra32) for hdd. However, astra 32 is not a constant temp. monitor. In reviews of some laptops posted to notebookreview.com I see that HDD Tune can read hdd temp., but not in my case. Does anyone know why it's so difficult to get hdd temp. for hp dv2310us (or maybe some other laptops by hp, I have no idea about others)?

Is there a way to disable SATA in Windows Vista? If it's possible in XP, then it should theoretically have a Vista counterpart right?
WD Lifeguard Utilities don't support Vista yet. It refuses to even install. -
Is there a non-BIOS method to enable SMART? The specifications for the drive say that it supports SMART, but it's not showing up anywhere.

In fact, I just realized that the drive is SATA but the driver is SCSI. Is that a problem?

This is most likely a driver issue with Vista. In my V3000Z which is basically the Compaq clone of the HP dv2000z. None of the HD monitoring devices were unable to read the data until I installed the nforce chipset drivers for XP in Vista. Plus, I dont know why the device manager in Vista identifies as a SCSI device. With XP I can see it is identified as a SATA drive.

Plus they also offer an explanation why the SATA drive is recognised as a SCSI device. This is also related to the missing SMART info...
