Since I've been waiting for 45 minutes on hold with HP, hopefully someone here can provide some advice.
I stupidly set an open water bottle by the laptop and the dog knocked it over with her tail. I caught it pretty quickly, and not very much spilled- but some still got in there. It mainly spilled on the fingerpad area. The keyboard is totally fine, no problems, but the pad has been kind of weird since then.
This happened about 2 hours ago, and while it has gotten progressively better, I'm still concerned. Right after it happened the cursor was moving across the screen on it's own- it would stop when I turned the fingerpad off and used my own mouse- but that stopped after about 20 minutes. After that, when I used the pad the cursor was being sort of jumpy- it would skip to areas on the screen. That has since stopped as well, and now it seems to be working okay as far as I can tell. The cursor moves smoothly, and both buttons appear to work fine.
I have the accidental protection with HP, so that's not an issue. I just would prefer not to send it in- but obviously if it needs to go it needs to go. This is my first laptop, and I'm not very savvy with computers in general, so is this serious enough to send in for repair (when it seems to be working okay now)? Any help is very appreciated, thanks!

Why don't you try drying out the notebook for a few days. Just let it sit, unused.
Also, you need to turn the notebook off. Now. Because water and running electronics can REALLY damage stuff. -
you will have to wait for it to vaporate

shoelace_510 8700M GT inside... ^-^;
If I were you I would IMMEDIATELY shut down the computer until you have a response from HP.
Using a computer that has water inside of it before it has had time to dry is not a good idea because it could really screw up the hardware if it gets to the right places!!
Glad to hear that you have accident protection though!
Good luck and hope this helps! -
Open the notebook, with the screen at a 180* angle from the keyboard, and let it sit upside down (with the screen and the keyboard as the base/bottom). Sending it back would be best, as it is necessary to open and dry if water has seeped in.

Everything has been turned off, I'm just going to leave it for the time being. I would say that it was 1 tablespoon that spilled in total, it really wasn't very much at all. If I turn it on in a couple of days and everything works, great, if not, off it goes. Thanks for the advice everyone.

also take out the battery so no power is available to the internal components. Also hold the power button down for a few seconds after taking out the battery to release any power left.
Spilled water on the Dv5t- Ugh
