I own a G7 1070us laptop, recently bought it, and since I started using it, the hard drive has made a strange clicking or clinking sound, similar to a spring being sprung. I cant seem to figure out what causes is, it occurs randomly, sometimes 10 times a minute, and sometimes once every couple minutes.
I took my computer back to the store I bought it at, the tech looked at it, problem is you can only hear it when theres no other sound, even typing blocks it. He was more than happy to exchange it for a brand new one, which almost immediately started doing the EXACT same thing, but more often.
I dont have any important data on this computer, but I dont want it to crap out on me in 3 months completely unexpected. I have googled the hard drive model, and it seems this isnt too uncommon, but I cant find anything more specific than a "clicking sound". I tried to record it, ignore the sounds after 00:15, that's me using my mouse.

It seems to be getting worse, Im thinking of taking it back to the store that I bought it from. I dont want to do that again. -
That is the "Click of Death" or "Backup your data now and get it replaced" for short.

Don't speak too soon there metril.
This sound could be created from a variety of different sources.
Hard drives are fragile disks with a head that constantly thrashes and writes upon completing an action on your computer.
It is possible for the hard disk to be on its decline, but it could be something so harmless. That clicking you hear is the head parking itself on the disk.
Occasionally, you'll hear a beep or two very faintly along with that clinking. The sound could be as a result of something like a power management conflict or your notebook compensating for shocks.
Is your computer idle for extended periods of time or is it shut off each night?
How do you use your notebook? On a firm surface with proper elevation or a soft, permeable surface (i.e. your lap)? -
It's true that the sound could be from the head parking, but the OP mentions that it got worse. Usually, the head parking has a pattern to it since it depends on your usage patterns. Also, head parking noise should decrease over time due to things like prefetch and superfetch, which were designed to load constantly and consistently used programs and dlls into memory.
Perhaps I did jump to a conclusion too soon, but the OP should at least do a backup of all his/her data now.
@OP
Run the hard drive diagnostic. It should be available to you in the BIOS. If not, you can find a lot of hard drive diagnostic programs freely available from each of the hard drive manufacturers. -
You haven't told us what hard drive it is.
