Is there a way to get the laptop to NOT disable LAN or wireless connectivity when it goes into stand by? I may be doing a large download and would like it to keep going instead of dropping all network connections.

no. you may close the lid without forcing the laptop into standby but there's no way you can download while in standby (the standby mode lowers the power consumption of the book)
