    hey
i have discovered yet another problem with my hp dv6500 special edition notebook.... the start up is taking too long, i have stopped all the softwares loading at the Start up except for default one... which came with the laptop... but still it takes atleast 1minute 30 seconds... before the "welcome" with the loadin thing disappears and then it takes even mmore time to load the side bar... roughly 30 seconds.... it was faster before i'm not sure what the problem is now.
I have installed no new softwares that might cause that might cause this to happen.... could anyone recomend a possible solution...
    cheers

Read the stickies. There's a great clean install guide there.

i'm not considering clean install as when i got the laptop... it worked fine... the start up was qiuck... if this is because of some junk from HP it should have occured before.. i have also scanned my pc with norton a few times and it does not detect anything...

    +1

Uninstall the piece of resource hogging crap. Try AVAST, which is a free, efficient anti-virus program.

Another tip is to use a program called TuneXP 1.5 (also works on Vista). Especially useful are the 'Ultra Fast Bootup' option and 'Fast Shutdown' options.

    Hey
well believe it or not i have tried loads of different antiviruses on my desktop i dont know how good they are but one thing that i'm sure about is that they slow ur computer by the same amount... plus i got norton with hp... if it is the root to problem it should have slowed my computer down then... why, after two months, has it suddenly started slowing my computer when i havnt even changed even 1 of its settings...?

Look into your STARTUP and into the TASK SCHEDULER. Most likely there are unnecessary processes in both.

Norton Internet Security comes with 60 days trial is good start on my Compaq and it doesn't slow down at all. After it is expired I will unstall it and install low resource Avira AntiVirus or AOL Active Virus Scanner..both are free.

The restore discs contain all the bloatware, and thus take up that 20 GB.

Well... as i said.. people dont like norton because its not such a good anti virus... however they just exadurate it by saying its a drain on resources.. for me its not that good pf an anti virus but its slows down ur pc by just as much amount as others...

Vista itself uses around 8gb of HD space. The rest is for programs (regular and bloatware), and system restore which can take up to 16gb! And a couple of gigs for the paging file.
