When a startup password is set on the BIOS, the computer makes a loud and obnoxious beep on bootup while prompting for a password. The alternative I use is a security password after Windows already loads, right before the welcome screen. I'd really like to prompt for a PW right at startup before the OS boots but I hate having it beep so loud. I couldn't use that anywhere in public because it would disturb people. I'm not sure why HP did that, but does anyone know of a way to disable the beep?

That would be a BIOS control. Most BIOS have volume settings for beeps, including a mute option.

mine is pretty quite and very quick, absolutely doesn't bother anyone, I dont think anyone would actually be able to notice... It definitely isn't adjustable in the BIOS itself, at least F.013 version oh HP4000
