I've posted in the various Envy 14 threads a couple times here, searched, but have been unable to find the root of my problem. It's a seriously simple issue, but I'm just curious if this is unique.

I can't seem to get the HP MediaSmart SmartMenu to install or run properly. I feel like I must be doing something wrong. I only even care to have this so my mute light will work properly (it would be useful to remind me if my sound is off during class when I am taking notes).

I downloaded the MediaSmart SmartMenu software and ran the setup exe, which went fine, then it opens a command prompt which attempts to run some commands. The command prompt closes, but then nothing else happens. I can see the "HP MediaSmart" software in my start menu, but running it appears to do nothing. I don't think this is normal.

Am I missing some kind of prerequisite software? Do I need the HP_TOOLS partition or something? The only other piece of HP software I have installed is the HP Wireless Assistant (which is admittedly kind of useful).

Does anyone have any kind of idea as to what I should do?

I hate making a new thread over this, but I really want to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I think the smart menu doesn't control the mute light.

hp quick launch might (not to be confused with hp quickweb)

if not that then powering off, unplugging, pulling out the battery, and then holding the power button down for 30 seconds might fix things instead.

I did a clean Install and also had the same Mute button not lighting up problem. I finally got it to work, I only installed HP webcam from the SWsetup folder.

    I went here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...popular-hp-notebook-software-compilation.html
and downloaded just "hp smartmenu". Even after I installed it, it took like 3 or so reboots for the light to finally turn on when I pressed the mute button.

The good thing with HP SmartMenu is that it doesn't have all the HP bloatware, it's just for the buttons on the top row (I believe, do not quote me on that).

Maybe someone with more knowledge can tell me if I am right or wrong. Either way, worked for me.

I tried the download from the link you provided (multiple times) with no luck.

I tried the battery/power button trick as well, and nothing.

I also tried the MediaSmart SmartMenu from the SWSETUP folder, nothing.

Let me ask this, is this program actually supposed to be a visible window or anything? I get nothing in the system tray, no visible window, no activity when I launch it... I don't even see a service for it in my Services browser, or in MSCONFIG.

Anyone have any idea what could be going on? Again, I'm on a clean install on my SSD with just the HP Wireless Assistant installed. Maybe I'm missing some prerequisite driver or something?...

    Thanks in advance guys.

honestly it should probably work by itself. but I dunno.

I'll, in a few days, see what happens when I clean install again on my replacement hdd and try to help you out then. It should hopefully arrive by thursday

After installing HP Smartmenu you won't see an actual program run, you won't see an icon in the talkbar (thank god) and you can't actually run it. It runs in the background though. If I go to Taskmanager > processes > there I actually see SmartMenu.exe is running. Try to increase/decrease the volume, do you get a popup with a volume bar in the center of your screen? If so , then Smartmenu is installed.

See, after installing the MediaSmart SmartMenu software, I get no tray icon or process that runs. I think I am missing some kind of prerequisite driver or software or something...

Please let me know what happens with your clean install... In the meantime, anyone have any other ideas?
