Hi,
I have a strange clicking noise that comes and goes randomly on my dv9000z with dual hard drive. At first I thought that it might be hard drive related, but I looked at the SMART on both drives and both of them haven't logged a single error, so it doesn't look like it's a hard drive issue. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

If the noise comes every few seconds, it is nothing to worry about. The arm within the hard disk is contantly moving to gather data, so it will make a noise whenever it makes a sudden or abrupt movement.

You're probably right. I think that it starts up more when I'm doing something hd intensive (such as bit-torrent) rather than doing something CPU intensive. What basically happens is that it clicks and then after a few seconds clicks again and goes on for quite some time. I just started bit-torrent. I'll check to see if it starts clicking or not and if it stops when I shut it down.

Some hard disks park the head frequently. I had a Micron laptop that was clicking on a regular time interval when idle. Nothing's wrong with that except it can get on your nerves. Try to end all background sessions on your computer to see whether the click continues. In that case, it's just a matter of the way the HD is designed.

check the hard driver install(mounting) fixture. Sometime, the four mounting screws were too tight. Reintall the hard driver, do not fix the screws too tight .

Sounds normal to me because it's not a continuous sound.

If you download a lot of torrents i would recommend an external disk drive for you to download them onto. its my personal experience, and a pretty proven fact that they kill hd's prematurely.
After 2 hd's died out of the blue a few years ago, when i first got into torrents, i was scratching my head. Some investigating lead me to it killing hd's.
Now i send them straight to usb hd's. everything stays nice and cool, and my nice expensive seagate 7200 rpm sata drive stays nice and comfy. -
On other boards I have read that updating the bios will take care of the clicking sound.
