    Hi everyone,
I have a custom configured dv9700 that I got in late April of this year (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz, dual hard drives 250gb total, 4 gb ram, GeForce 8600M GS graphics card). Today I noticed a strange problem with the screen, it is hard to explain but I will try. While looking at the desktop, in certain areas the color was extremely oversaturated and flickering red (very pixelated, bright dots etc). I clicked and it immediately went away, but since then it happened a few other times but it always goes away. I get the feeling a connection is loose to the screen since one time it happened I tapped the lid and it stopped, also when I press (not hard) on certain areas of the lid similar things happen to the display, although not nearly as noticeable as the first time. The only recent change I have made to the laptop was upgrading the memory from 2GB to 4GB (last week). Anyone else have this happen, or any ideas what the problem might be?
    Thanks
    Dan

    Dan,

Have you tried putting the original ram back in the laptop or re-seating the ram? Perhaps you have some faulty ram or it's not all the way connected.

I would try those two options before going into anything deeper.

    Good luck!

our display will fail in the next few days. been there done that with the DV9000

You are a victim of the Nvidea chip problem. Hopefully your notebook is listed as affected in the Warranty Enhancement Program. if not you'll have to twist the arm of a case manager who will ultimately relent.

Mine failed 3 times. 3rd time was right out of the box. Just my luck that it hasn't failed a 4th time YET which makes me eligible for a new notebook.

Originally mine started subtlely with a kind of plaid looking pattern on the screen. days later total failure

    Leaf,
I am certain that the ram is completely connected, the first time I installed it my laptop was only recognizing 1 2gb stick; I realized that one wasn't connected all the way but I made sure they were in good the second time ;) Maybe it is faulty in some way though, it does seem sort of weird that although my system information is now displaying 4gb my memory usage gauge (not sure how accurate this is?) still shows about 45% being used running just the OS and nothing else. Also performance hasn't increased nearly as much as I would have expected.

    Ed C,
I sure hope your wrong about my laptop  If my display does ultimately fail, what do you suggest doing first? I already have talked to HP customer service and have a case manager due to the fact that my brand new laptop arrived out of the box with minor scratches/dings/dents. I didn't want to risk shipping it back to HP after all the horror stories on here and the fact that as far as I could tell it was only minor cosmetic damage; just not something I expected from a brand new unused laptop
    Thanks for your help,
    Dan

I've got no recommendations. I wish you luck however. Me? i'm being very careful with my data--making frequent backups. I'll hold on to this notebook until next April because if it fails before then, I get a free replacement. April I sell it and move on.

It does bother me a bit that if I do that, I'm selling my future problem to someone else, but I rationalize away that thought by considering that is exactly what HP is doing to me...replacing the failed motherboard with a motherboard destined to fail.

Nvidea should step up to the plate in this one. If you have a DV9xxx with an Nvidea GPU, failure is nearly inevitable

Thanks for your help. The screen is still working but it really seems to be a physical connection problem, I can see similar flickering/problems with the display when I open and close the lid.
    Thanks again

Well its been 4 months and the screen is still working, but the problem has gotten quite a bit worse recently. It definitely seems to be a mechanical connection problem because the display changes when the lid is moved. Now it has gotten to the point where it will go completely out or will be very dim unless the screen is held at the right angle. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I really don't want to send it to HP for repair, but it has become so bad I am almost sure I will loose it completely soon.
    Thanks
    Dan
