I have a Compaq R4000 with AMD sempron, 1 gig of ram, 80 gb HD. I have decided to reformat and fresh install. When I try to a fresh install with any OS, linux or windows XP it gets through loading the basic drivers. when it gets to the starting windows it locks up, does the same also with any linux distro. Any Ideas what could be the problem?

Are you using a burned copy of Windows. If you are, it could be corrupt somehow or manufacturer specific. Also, what Linux distribution are you attempting to use? It's hard to help you out without more information. You may also want to put the exact model of the computer (R4xxx).

Windows XP home OEM, Ubuntu 10.04. It is a R4115us. I have ran memtest on it with no failures also tried a outboard USB DVD drive. Removed the original HD and replaced with another I have still nothing, will not continue a fresh install.
