My previous attempt on re-installing XP was recorded here. A few days ago, I have determined that I need Win 2k3 Server for my development and so I scraped the XP OS. For this effort I have prepared a slipstreamed Windows 2003 Server CD with SP1, you can probably google on how to do that if necessary. Then I have pretty much re-do the whole install using my notes from before. But this time, things aren't as smooth as before as most of the components are probably not Win 2k3 certified or tested. Here are a few things I have to do in order to make ALL of the devices and components recognized:

    1. Receive errors while installing HD Audio and Modem. During the installation, it yields the message: "Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver"

Solution: The Microsoft UAA Bus Driver caused the subsequent Audio and Modem install failure even though the UAA Bus Driver Installation was smooth without error. To fix the UAA Bus Driver issue, I applied a patch from Microsoft: Search for KB901105 (WindowsServer2003-KB901105-v3-x86-ENU.exe)

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=D0934D06-15B3-4A65-8C52-746BEB24E86C&displaylang=en

After applying the patch, the Realtek HD Audio and Modem installation got through with no issue.

    2. Unknown device (Device Id:ACPI\HPQ0006\2&DABA3FF&0 )

This device is part of the QuickLaunch buttons from SwSetup\QLB\Disk1\Setup.exe. I did the Setup from the SwSetup (Version=6.10.102). Although I didn't get any errors, it failed to recognize the above device to the HID Keyboard Device.

Solution: Uninstall the QuickLaunch and reinstall the Setup.exe. But this time, I change its property to "Run this program using Windows XP compatiblity mode". (Right click on the Setup.exe and click Property, goto Compatibility tab and check the Run this program using Compatiblity mode for Windows XP). After a reboot, I saw the device being recognized.

    3. Ricoh R5C832/843 Reader left an Unknown PCI device and my Memory stick is not recognized by the machine.

At first, I was able to install (Ricoh R5C832/843 Flash Media Driver Ver.1.01.10) from \SwSetup\MISC2\setup.exe without any issue but after reboot, I still couldn't use my memory stick. I doubt other media could be recognized as another poster (webdev511) also report some similar issues in this post. I did some research on the web and found out that users of Dell and IBM laptops are reporting exactly the same issues as mine. Interestingly, a DELL user pointed out that he could resolve the issue by using a driver provided in the NEC VERSA website. I did the same thing although I hesitated at first. But it worked!!! Not only I could get my Memory stick recognized but it resolved all of the device errors message. Here's the link if you are interested to do the same thing:

    http://202.188.160.140/user/user_drivercat.asp?product_category=Notebook&model_series=VERSA%20E%20Series&model_id=70

I downloaded the Ricoh SD/MS/xD cardreader driver (ricoh-r5cxx10nb.exe) from the Card Reader section.

I have to admit that I didn't thoroughly tested everything in details. But I think the setup should be pretty close. I know most of you probably won't run your laptops with Win 2k3 Server. But for those of you who do, hope these notes are helpful to you.

    Cheers,
    Notebook Abuser

If you don't know what Windows 2003 Server is, then you really don't need it. :) Almost all end-users won't need Server products especially for their laptops. The reasons a few of us do need it is for running web server, database or other code development products. My reason for installing it is so that I can create database application using Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Otherwise, I wouldn't have considered doing such things. Now I hope booting up and shutting down windows on a daily basis won't take too long because Server OS usually has a lot of services running in the background. :)

I just put Server 2003 on my new Lenovo laptop and I can assure you it starts up and shuts down much, much quicker than did the XP that came on it. I have never seen a new machine loaded down with so much stuff!

I am trying to compile a CD with all the bits and pieces I've used to get all the hardware to work. Or I will, as soon as the cardreader reads cards. This Lenovo 3000 C200 is a nice machine for the price, but it would have been better if they hadn't used the ****ty Broadcom wireless and the undriveable Ricoh cardreader. The 54g wireless works ok, but it drops out randomly and then reconnects.

    Congratulation freddyzdead,

I also noticed that my win 2k3 server boots up very fast. I am not sure if it's faster than when I had xp prof before but it is absolutely faster than my Dell 1600SC Server running Pentinum Xeon chip. I think my Dell server took almost as long just to get past the POST due to all those SCSI device thingy. Another thing is I am a database guy, and I have installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition with everything like the Reporting, Integration, and Analysis Services. And it's been running very well. I think the Core 2 Duo processor is a big reason it runs fast and of course having 2gb RAM for a database server is a win-win scenario.

Regarding your Ricoh card reader on the Lenovo, you should do some searching on google. Like I said before, I have seen other users especially Dell have the same issues that I had. You might want to try the NEC's driver if you have no other alternative solutions. Good luck!

    Hi Notebook Abuser
Thank you very much for your first post!

I have downloaded the ricoh-r5cxx10nb.exe and now unknown PCI Device disapeared and SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller came instead. But when i insert an SD card it says new hardware found named Secure Digital Storage Device and whn i try to install a driver for it - there is no usable driver found.
Please can you confirm that in your case SD card is really working?

    Thanks!

P.S. My Laptop is Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505. Card reader device is Dell Ricoh R5C832 Chipset.

Solved I have copyed installation files from temporary folder and at next try I gave the path to folder "installation files dir"\sd in driver installation prompt and everything is OK now!

Many thanks to Notebook Abuser for his tips on SD card drivers and to freddyzdead for making the drivers more accessible (see his post at Rick Strahl's blog). Maybe someone could explain how you do get at those pesky drivers once the NEC Versa sw is installed.

Happy to be able to finally access SD card reader under Windows 2003 Server on my Lenovo N100!

Instead of installing Windows Server 2003, why not just install XP/Vista and use it for the usual stuff and install VM instances of Windows Server 2003 in that XP/Vista for working on database and application development.
I have Vista Ultimate on my DV9000T and have VMware installed. I do a lot of testing on Exchange, SQL, SMS..etc and VMware proves to be really invaluable.

    Hey Kewlguy,

In my case I dual boot XP/Windows Server because most of the time I only need XP and I figured that with 2GB RAM a VM w/Windows Server would be too slow, let alone using Vista as the host.

But I'm intrigued - how much RAM do you have on board and how much do you dedicate to the VM? Also, when you are running Exchange, which version are you using and which roles have you configured the Windows Server VM with?

    Hello!
    I have Lenovo 3000 N100.
There was Vista Basic preinstalled, but because some hardware I have to use, I've installed Windows XP Pro.
Installation of drivers was a nightmare, but after about 5 hours, everything except Ricoh Card Reader works.

When I've put SD card into the slot, nothing has happened, so I've installed NEC drivers as mentioned on the previous page of this thread.
Now, I need "Secure Digital Storage Device" driver, but I don't know how to get it. I can't find temporary files (I've searched whole partition for "sd" directory and nothing).

If someone can, please send me this driver to tomksoft (at) gmail.com or upload to Rapidshare.com and post link here.

    Thanks!

You shouldn't need those NEC drivers for XP - I would download latest drivers from Lenovo instead.

    Unfortunately, they doesn't work.
I can see the drivers are installed in the Hardware Manager, but when I put SD card into the slot, nothing happens (the led just blinks two times - that's all).
Probably because this drivers are for XP SP2 (I have XP SP1 and I can't upgrade, because very important hardware will stop working).

So, I think that all I need is Secure Digital Storage Device driver...

PS. Sorry for posting in wrong category, I've came here from Google. I will open thread in Lenovo subforum about my problem.

Thanks Windy, that's the file I was looking for.

No love from it though. When I insert an SD card, I get a SD Disk Device with a question mark over it in the disk drives section of device manager. won't load the driver "code 10"....

anyone have ideas about fixing this?

Thanks to all the posts. I had my SD Card Reader working in my windows 2003 server after applied the ricoh-r5cxx10nb.exe. But I get an event error after that, saying "The rimsptsk service failed to start due to the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. "

Can anybody help me to get rid of it? Can I just delete the service registry?

And for SD Card, only when I plug in the card, a new driver letter appears. But for xD-Picture and MemoryStick, the driver always there. I don't like that. Can anyone help me to remove them...

Windy, thanks for your post and uploading the IBM file. This worked for my SONY netbook W11 series. I upgraded from XP home to W2k3 and lost the SD card. After HOURS of tweaking hacking downloading... well nothing... until this thread. So far, the installer you linked to is working. I'll report back IF there are problems reading/writing to the card... but so far, the drivers installed and I can read.

    **EDIT**
Spoke a little too soon. It works with SD cards, but not the newer SDHC cards, ie. larger than 2GB. Will keep looking...

    ***UPDATE***

    SDHC cards (high capacity) solved.

1./ Find this file: WindowsXP-KB934428-v3-x86-ENU.exe You can get it from MS or from various other sites. Google it

2./ If you run it, it will fail with "not for this version of windows"... so EXTRACT IT MANUALLY. Via cmd line, WindowsXP-KB934428-v3-x86-ENU.exe /extract

3./ In the extracted folder update, make the file update.exe run as compatible with WindowsXP

    4./ Run update.exe

All done. SDHC now installed and working :)
