I just got my dv2500t about last week and I'm new to HP (my first HP computer), laptops (my first laptop), and Vista (first time trying Vista Home Premium).

Everything was working pretty decently and I was starting to think..hey Vista isn't so bad...or hey...HP is pretty good, but when I turned on my computer to play some music...it didn't work. Now I'm not sure if the files got corrupted or whatever, so I stick my flash drive back in (the music is on my flash drive) and the computer still won't play my music. Then I try playing some of my video files and they all of sudden don't work either. Some of them work...but there is only video and no sound.

On some, I get this message:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

Right, I figured that out... so I check out Device Manager, and everything looks good, nothing wrong, "device functioning properly" you know, all that good stuff. And I'm just really stumped right now.

The only problem I ran into earlier was when I tried to update my sound drivers from HP and it made my sound dead...so I reinstalled the old drivers and then it was working fine....until this. What do I do? TIA

*oh I right clicked my speaker icon on the taskbar and it said I had some problems with this driver...so i should disable it and i say ok.......and now everything is ok. thanks.....for helping me solve my own problem :p

Glad you sorted it. I was going to suggest a problem with your drivers but it might also be worth a quick look at the BIOS configuration (usually DEL on startup) just to check everything there is OK.
