Does this void the warranty?...If so, I guess they won't know unless I tell them (or if I send it back, then I can swap it back).

Are there any other SERIOUS implications by doing this?

What's needed?...Just the CPU, or the motherboard, too?

    Would CompUSA/Bestbuy do this?

    Thanks!!

    Yes.

Your computer may or may not work.
The laptop will work just make sure you follow the instructions and apply the thermal paste and the other cooling devices properly.
There will be some issues like the power now function not working properly. But these can be figured out by reinstalling the drivers and other such stuff. Only thing is that you will have to find out this information online.

What's needed?...Just the CPU, or the motherboard, too?...

If it is the r4000 then you might need a motherboard change(not really recommended since mb's are proprietary and finding one which will work is a big pain), since I dont think there are mobile class socket 939 cpu's. The r3000/zv5000 on the other hand are socket 754 boards and you can just swap the cpu's.

    Would CompUSA/Bestbuy do this?...

I dont know a definitive answer to this question but I dont think they would.

Your zv6000 uses Socket 939 CPUs. There are no Mobile-class Socket 939 chips, that's a Socket 754 thing. What you want is one of the new Venice- or San Diego-core Athlon 64's, which will accomplish the same thing (1.4V core). AFAIK no one has tried this yet so it's unknown whether the zv6000 BIOS will recognize the Venice cores properly or not. If not, it will probably only break PowerNOW!, but you can use CrystalCPUID instead (and undervolt while you're at it).

See the zv6000 service manual for instructions on how to do a CPU swap. They made it much more difficult than it was for the zv5000z.

This does void your warranty. It's strictly for people who know what they're doing.

Thanks guys!! I guess I'll rethink this idea, too.
