Has anyone swapped the envy 15 5830 GPU with a 5870 ? is it even possible ?
I have seen a few 5870's on ebay and wondered if it was possible to swap

impossible
envy15 is not MXMIII -
it is not soldered onto the motherboard I heard, however the cooling system may not be able to handle the hate generate from 5870.

I thought that it was a mxmIII since it uses the same processor of the 5850/70, are you sure about it?

even if you could get creative in replacing the GPU the 5870 needs more power (60W) than the 5830 (24W) and there's no way to adjust it with this motherboard/bios. probably doesn't have the capability to supply that much. the existing cooling system might work though.

i doubt the power supply can even handle the increase in power even if you could custom mod the bios to recognize the card. this is an unrealistic project besides the 5830 is a great card already.

Yeh. I can push my Envy to use 130W, without the battery installed (would need to draw 150W just to charge the battery too at the same time)
5870 would bring this to 170+ Watt...
(note my test case is extreme, maxed wifi, maxed screen, 3 instance of Linpack, 1 instance of Furmark "xtreme burn mode", GPU overclock 750/1115)
I'm pretty sure If I did that with the battery installed, it would literally fry the PS. Requesting 150W from it would surely trick a safety mechanism..
I did find one safety, though. When I run this extreme power test, and pull the power cord (with batt installed) it will immediatly cut the system power completely. Guess the battery just can't do 130W, even for a split second. -
There are a lot more factors than just physical compatibility, as mentioned above. But chances are, the best you're going to get is the 5830 on your system.
Swapping a 5830 with a 5870 in a Envy 15 ?
